Kathy, please accept my sympathy and best wishes in regards to David’s passing.

I had the pleasure of working under Dave for many years, and then working alongside Dave for many more years. It is almost impossible for me to accomplish a repair around the house and not think of something that Dave may have taught me about the equipment I am repairing. To this day, when I go to hire a maintenance man at work, I invariably compare them to Dave. They never measure up to the “Gold” standard that Dave set.

When someone like Dave is gone, we often think that the world becomes a smaller place with their passing; with Dave, I prefer to think that world is a better place for his having been here.

Dear Kathy, Matt, Nickie, and Jeff,

I send you my heartfelt condolensces on the loss of Dave, your husband and Dad. For many years as a young person and next door neighbor, I felt as extended family at "Kathy & Dave's house." Dave's love for you all and the people in your lives was always apparent to me. He was keenly interested in every guest in your home, and in their ideas, and stories and laughter. And he shared his own mind and laughter so generously as well, I remember like it was yesterday. In the end, I am sure that you, his family, are his greatest story ever told. Keep on writing it and telling it and he will whisper to you the next line, just whenever you may miss him most.

Lots of love, John

Kathie,

You and your family are foremost in my prayers this day. I was deeply saddened to hear the news about Dave. A wonderfully kind man who always had something witty to say.

My best recollection is how he was so interested in talking to me about my life in Tennessee. He just seemed so enamored with Southern living in a way that I can vividly recall. He always made all of us feel welcomed at your home.

It was a blessing to have known him. God bless your family in this time of sorrow.

When I told my son Chris that Dave Newsted had died, Chris immediately remembered the scent of Dave's pipe. It was the scent of hospitality, he said. You were always welcome at the Newsteds' house.

That's true, and although Kathie was the dream hostess, I know she would not have been able to throw the bashes she so enjoyed, if it were not for Dave's quiet support. One of the things I'll remember most about him is that he was always...there. He enjoyed other people tremendously, always laughed at our jokes, always made us feel good just to be around him.. He was a prince, and we will not meet anyone like him ever again. I was priviledged to know him.
