To the family of George Kroll: Though your family and mine have never met, I must tell you that George's presence in mine and my family's life, made our lives sweeter, sillier, and richer. George was intelligent and had a great sense of humor. The blessing of George's friendship was shared to us by the Holmlunds. We all had some great times, together and my family and I will miss him, greatly. Kroll family: I pray you feel the Lord's embrace, in order to comfort you, in this time of loss. To "Awesome George": Soar with the Angels, Love. God Speed! I'll catch you on the flip-side, Friend. Most sincerely, the Hartmann Family

George was a major contributor and an active member of the Lake Michigan Model Car club. I first met George when I joined in 1992. I can say George will be missed and there will be a noticeable void at our club meetings without George. The one thing I learned from George is no matter what limitations you have to deal with, keep on perusing your goals and passions. I send also personal condolences to George's family.

I knew George through the Lake Michigan Model Car Club. He was an avid builder and an inspiration to us.
May he Rest in Peace in the arms of the Lord!

I don't know if Reader's Digest Magazine is even published anymore, but I do remember a regular feature entitled "My Most Unforgettable Character." One candidate for that title was undoubtedly George J. Kroll.
In a hobby where eyesight is paramount to the point that we wear magnifiers and regularly use digital technology to create our own parts, George had no vision. This didn't stop him, in fact, it didn't even dissuade him from building contest winning models. As a long time hobbyist, George held some pretty impressive credentials. He won Model of the Month in our regular contest, won Model of the Year in our annual contest, (repeatedly, I might add), and is the only LMMCC, (Lake Michigan Model Car Club), member I know of ever to win an IPMS, (International Plastic Modelers Society) National contest trophy.
Now, how could this be; I mean it would be obvious that anything he entered in a contest could easily be bested by another modeler with sight. The fact is that he was an enthusiastic participant, tried anything, any scale, any size and frequently took the award for a category in which there were few, if any, caring individuals to enter the contest.
He was a motor sports enthusiast and probably already knew that half the battle to winning the race is getting the entry to the track on time and ready to participate. Since my wife Dory and I are SCCA, (Sports Car Club of America), volunteer race staff, George was pretty much on our wave length and phone called me often for reference material on a kit he had just started. He didn't just go for the simple snap-together kits, either; oh no, quite the contrary. The more detail and higher degree of intricacy, the better he liked it.
Late last month, our twenty-plus year member George Kroll's sister called us to tell us that he would not be able to attend our May Club meeting because he was in the hospital, undergoing yet another heart procedure. To the surprise of nobody, last Sunday night, he phoned Dory and me to find out how the meeting went. Called me on his cell phone from his hospital bed, he did. He was in fine spirits, told me that although the hospital stay was quite an ordeal, he was feeling better already, and fully intended to be home in time for Memorial Day and the Indy 500.
He didn't make it.
The family left a message on our home phone, which Dory discovered was left only a couple hours before both of us got home late Thursday night from work. Our Treasurer Bob Deneen's wife has been contacted and Bob will take care of the typical Club offering, as he normally does, during these trying times. Probably as a donation to the designated charity in the name of George J. Kroll, one of our most unforgettable characters. The checkered flag is out for George.
