George Spoerl Obituary

Dr. George H. Spoerl A celebration of the life of Dr. George Henry Spoerl, 62, a longtime resident of Northbrook, will be held at 4 p.m. today, at the Village Presbyterian Church, Northbrook. Born in Chicago, he died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at his home. Dr. Spoerl graduated from Northwestern University where he was the production manager of the WAA-MU show. He met his wife, Barbara, at school. George received his medical degree from Northwestern University and served as a medical officer with the Navy in the Philippines during the Vietnam war. Dr. Spoerl worked for almost 30 years in his private ophthalmology practice, Northwest Eye Physicians of Arlington Heights. Over the years he focused in pediatric ophthalmology, due to his love of children, and also worked hard at and enjoyed keeping current with the most advanced surgical procedures to help old and young alike. He served on the staffs at Northwest Community Healthcare, Children's Memorial Hospital and Glenbrook Hospital. Dr. Spoerl was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology as well as a member of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus. He worked with residents at Northwestern University and donated his time to the Free Eye Clinic in a Hispanic community in downtown Chicago. His true passion was rooted in travel, adventure and embracing other peoples and cultures. He traveled extensively in four continents and always visited destinations on the "wild side!" He loved the outdoors and hiked everywhere, while sharing his love of animals and all creatures, great and small. He was a fabulous gourmet cook and a real food aficionado. Most every week he was watching either a foreign film or a great drama movie and then sharing in reviews. He was engaged in life at all times. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Barbara; mother, Marjorie; daughter, Kristin (Keith) Mackay; and son, Mark (Dina). Memorials may be made to Rapides Habitat for Humanity, 1320 Monroe St., Alexandria, LA or the Anti-Cruelty Society, 510 N. LaSalle St., Chicago, IL. Arrangements were made by Hanekamp Funeral Home, Northbrook. Friends may visit www.dailyherald.com/obits to express condolences and sign the guest book. For funeral information, (847)272-3890.

Twenty years ago,our daughter Julie met Dr.Spoerl when she was a toddler. My wife and I were truly impressed with how gently Dr. Spoerl treated her. Since then our entire family has been Dr.Spoerl's patients.

We were shocked and saddened to read and hear of Dr. Spoerl's death. It is hard to believe. We were patients of his for a number of years and always appreciated his kindness and professionalism as well as the "small talk" whenever we visited him. It was always a delight to see him. We will always be grateful the way he quickly picked up on Mary's special needs and referred her to another ophthamalogist for further treatment. Our deepest sympathy to the family. We pray that God will give you peace and comfort and strength in the days ahead.

My wife and I have been patients of Dr. Spoerl for many years. He will always hold a special place in our hearts for saving the life of our 12year old son. During a routine eye exam in July of 1998, Dr. Spoerl discovered that my sons optic nerves were swollen, which later led to the discovery of a malignant brain tumor.Follwing surgery and radiation, my son today is a happy and healthy boy.Had it not been for Dr. Spoerl's expertise, dedication and caring, I have no doubt the outcome would have been very different. God Bless Dr. Spoerl

I had been a patient of Dr. Spoerl for many years. He recently performed cataract surgery on me. He made me feel very confident and unafraid about the surgery. I am truly saddened by his death. I only wish that I had known him other than as my doctor. My very deepest sympathy to his family and his co-workers. I know he will be missed.

We were very sad to hear about the passing of Dr. Spoerl. We've been patients of his for years now and have always admired him as a doctor and fine human being. He always used to kid me when I would ask why this or that happened, and he would reply "too many birthdays." He will be missed.

Dr. Spoerl had been my ophthalmologist since I was 3 yrs. old. 17 yrs later it's a shock to hear such a wonderful man has passed. He always told me I was his greatest success story, but it had nothing to do with me, it was all him. :) Luv ya George!! You'll always hold a special place in my heart.
