JAMES BOYLAN Obituary

James C. "Jim" Boylan, 83, passed away on Tuesday, December 22, 2020. He was born January 29, 1937 in Elyria, Ohio, and had been a resident of Indianapolis and Carmel, Indiana, Lincolnshire and Gurnee, IL. He served in the Naval Reserves for several years. He graduated Ohio Northern University with a degree in Pharmacy and went on to earn his M.S. and Ph.D. in Industrial Pharmacy from Purdue University. Jim loved sports, especially baseball which he played through high school and hockey which he played at ONU and throughout his early career. He passed on his love of sports to his children, coaching his son's baseball teams and his daughter's touch football team. He loved sailing, which he also shared with his family. Jim began his career in pharmaceutical research at Eli Lilly (1963-1978). He was employed by G.D. Searle from 1978-1983 as Director of Pharmaceutical Development and by Abbott Laboratories Hospital Products Division from 1983-1999 as Director, Pharmaceutical Technology. Jim was an adjunct professor at Purdue (1982-1995), University of Kentucky (1974-2001) and University of Illinois (1982-1993). In addition to co-editing the Encyclopedia of Pharmaceutical Technology, 1st and 2nd editions, Jim was active in several professional organizations. These included United States Pharmacopeia (1985-2005), for which he chaired several committees and was an active member of others; the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (1986-96) of which he was a founding member; The Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences (1974-79), of which he held the offices of Vice President and President; The American Pharmaceutical Association (1972-1980); the Parenteral Drug Association (1982-94), for which he served on the Board of Directors. Jim was elected Distinguished Alumnus from Purdue University (Pharmacy) in 1985 and served as a Member of the Dean's Advisory Council (1989-2000). He also played an active role in his church, serving on the Vestry and heading up the Parish Council. Upon retirement, he enjoyed traveling, the theatre (both attending and performing), taking classes at the College of Lake County, and singing in choirs at CLC, Carthage College, Trinity and St. Patrick's Church choirs and Festival Arts of Antioch. Jim was a loving husband and father, generous mentor, and good friend. Surviving are his wife, Jean; his children, Susan (John) Burton), and Tom (Meredith); his grandchildren, Allison (Chris) Tancig and Zachary Burton; Haley and Parker Boylan; and great-grandchildren, Finn and Beau Tancig; his sisters, Sally (Stanley) Kaminski and Elizabeth (William) Green; and one niece, two nephews, three grandnieces and four grandnephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Faith (Wilford) Boylan; and his brother, Robert. The Funeral Mass will be at St. Patrick Church, Wadsworth, January 29, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. Those planning to attend the service are requested to register with St. Patrick's Church (847-244-4161) by Jan. 27, 2021 in compliance with CDC/Archdiocesan guidelines for Covid.
