NORMA DOERING Obituary

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS - Norma L. Doering, formerly of Arlington Heights, was born on December 16, 1931 in Freeport, Illinois to Albert Carl and Bessie Catherine (nee Herbig) Krueger. She died Saturday, December 6, 2014 in Stone Mountain, Georgia. Mrs. Doering graduated from Freeport High School, home of the Pretzels, in 1949 and attended Concordia Teacher's College in River Forest, IL; Wittenberg University in Springfield, OH; and University of Illinois. Norma taught at Olive-Mary Stitt School (District 25), Arlington Heights, IL and Winkelman Elementary School (District 31), Glenview, IL. Norma was active in church and community throughout her life; she was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Arlington Heights, IL, and an active member of The Women's Network of Lutheran Social Services of Illinois where she served on assorted committees and as a board member. Norma, along with her husband, established an endowed scholarship to provide support for elementary education students at the University of Illinois. The endowment recognizes Norma's outstanding career as a teacher and the Doering's long history of involvement with the university. She was an incredibly loving and vibrant mother and grandmother who loved to read, sing, play the piano, travel, and shop - especially for other people. Her greatest passion was her family. Norma is survived by her children, Beth Anne (Larry) Obrock and Michael Charles Doering; and her grandchildren, Erin and Kyle Obrock and Ellie and Karyna Doering. She was preceded in death by husband of 55 years, Charles William Doering whom she married August 23, 1953; her parents; and her siblings, Vernice Wilke and Melvin Krueger. Family will receive guests from 10:00 am until time of Funeral Service at 11:00 am, Saturday, December 13, 2014 at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, 1234 N. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights. Interment private. Norma's family is grateful to the staff at Cornerstone-Park Springs in Stone Mountain, GA for the marvelous care they provided to their mother and grandmother during the last four years of her life. Memorials may be made to The Women's Network of Lutheran Social Services of Illinois, 1001 E. Touhy Avenue, Suite 50, Des Plaines, IL 60018. Beth and Michael, I'm so sorry for your loss. I always enjoyed seeing and talking to your mom and dad at the Krueger family gatherings, and especially enjoyed visiting your parents in Paris. I was so impressed with the way Norma had immersed herself in French culture and language.
I'm so sorry I won't be able to come to the service, as I'm out of town, but you and your families are in my thoughts.

I think I had this lady as a teacher at Immanuel Lutheran school in Freeport, Il when I was in 1rst or 2nd grade.

The photo here of Norma says it all. Her smile was infectious and her outlook on life was always so refreshing. She was a great mother, sister, grandmother, friend and even like an aunt to me. She is now still smiling and joking, now reunited with so many family members, and feeling whole again, I am sure! Norma, you will be missed! Our thoughts remain with Beth, Mike, Paul and families in your loss. Much love to you all.
