PETER LAFORGE Obituary

Peter J. LaForge, 89, passed away peacefully on Sept. 6, 2017. Loving husband of 64 years to Margaret E., nee Sullivan; devoted father of Phillip (Patricia), Steven (Julie), and the late Lisa; proud grandfather of Peter, Claire, Jonathan, and Lorissa; caring uncle to many nieces and nephews. Peter was born and raised in Ironwood, Michigan, and was until his death proud of his "U.P." heritage. He served in the United States Army, earning the rank of Sergeant in the Air Force serving in Japan after the end of the Second World War. Pete was a proud "Domer," having completed his undergraduate education and graduate work at the University of Notre Dame. He loved to learn and later in life attended the Florida State University. He taught high school English, and retired from Niles North High School, where he served as an administrator and teacher. In his retirement, Pete continued writing and worked with his nephew David DeRoche to develop a family history of the LaForge family. Peter LaForge was a husband, father, grandfather-"Papa," teacher, poet, historian, actor, and jock. He believed that the world spun on its correct axis when the Fighting Irish, Packers, and Cubs were winning. He loved life and lived it 100% every single day. The family is planning a service at a later date in his beloved Upper Peninsula.

Mr. LaForge changed my life. He brought me beyond literature, to an understanding of language via his Semantics class at NNHS. I also studied Shakespeare with him.

He was a hero in so many ways to me.

Thank you Mr. LaForge.

Pete always spared the time to listen, to guide
a person through thoughts about life...teaching...

No one in the Niles North English Department
could match him for his depth of thought. We
knew we were in the presence of greatness.
