ARLINGTON HEIGHTS - Raymond Shields was born on August 23, 1930, in Muskegon, MI, to William Shields and Dorothy Shields. He died November 11, 2022, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Shields served in the United States Army during the Korean War in Anchorage, Alaska. Ray worked as a printer for GTE in Des Plaines until his retirement in 1996. Ray received the Arlington Heights Good Neighbor Award in 2012. He had many hobbies over the years, including wine making, photography, ham radio, bowling, music, restoring his Mustangs, but his passion was woodworking. He was always lending a helping hand to family, neighbors, and the Arlington Heights Nurses Club Lending Closet. You would often see his handiwork on the bottom of walkers with cut tennis balls. His most beloved way to spend time was with his family during the summers; camping with his family and he had many stories to tell around the campfires. He loved God, family, country, a glass of wine and a bowl of ice cream. He never ever complained, was simple man with simple needs and was always ready to help anyone, anywhere with anything. Ray is survived by his wife of 67 years, Dolores "Dodie" (nee Hutton), whom he married on August 16, 1955, in Anchorage, AK; his children, Denise (Rick) Kirsten, Karen Misura, Steven (Debbie) Shields, Matthew (Mary) Shields and Rose (Tim) Guarino; his grandchildren, Rick (Kristi) Kirsten, Bryan Kirsten, Nicole (Rob) Crowell, Alyssa Misura, Abby Misura, Ashley Shields, Eric Shields, Rebecca (Joe) Grap, Rachel Shields, Emily Guarino and Joseph Guarino; his great-grandchildren, Katlyn Kirsten, Hallie Kirsten, Sean Kirsten, Luke Kirsten and Alex Crowell; he is also survived by his siblings, Kathleen (late Phil) Gallivan and Louis George (Virge) Shields. Ray is preceded in death by his parents; as well as his siblings, William Shields, Jr., Patrick (Diane) Shields, Harold (late Peggy) Shields and Dottie (late Bill) Breen. Raymond's family would like to extend their thanks to JourneyCare Hospice for their kind and compassionate care during this difficult time. Visitation will be Thursday, November 17, 2022, from 10:00 am until the time of the Funeral Mass at 11:00 am at Our Lady of the Wayside Catholic Church, 440 South Mitchell Avenue, Arlington Heights, IL 60005. Interment will follow at St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery in Palatine. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Honor Flight Chicago, 9701 W. Higgins Rd., Ste. 310, Rosemont, IL 60018. Ray was the recipient of the 2018 Honor Flight Chicago, which totally overwhelmed him. He was overtaken and humbled by all that was done for these veterans.
