Robert Joseph Long

Robert Joseph Long of Barrington Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. Robert Joseph Long, 82, formerly of Evanston, will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, at St. Anne Church (corner of Franklin and Ela Streets), Barrington, where he will lie in state from 9 a.m. until the time of the Mass. Born Sept. 12, 1920, in Grand Rapids, Mich., he passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at his home. Burial will be in the Mount Carmel Cemetery, Hillside. Mr. Long retired from Illinois Bell Telephone Company after 45 years of service, where he started as a lineman with Michigan Bell and retired as a communications technical engineer. Robert served in the Army during World War II as a first lieutenant and he later served as finance officer of the American Legion Bell Post #242 in Chicago. He volunteered at Kirk School in Palatine and he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandson. Robert is survived by his wife, Else T. (nee Westphal), whom he married on June 20, 1969, in Chicago; children, Margie Long of Skokie, Dr. Noreen Long of North Carolina, Kathy (Bill) Schirmang of Glenview, Judy (Mark Zembryki) Long of Minneapolis, Bill (Judy) Long of Albuquerque, N.M.; stepson, Karl Schulz of Winnetka; grandchildren, Carl Mitchem, Todd, Tina and Ryan Schirmang, Jennifer Tarvin Long, Patty and Gabriella Long, Varo and Ana Zembryki, Kimberly and Karl J. Schulz; great-grandson, Carlitos Mitchem; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by wives, Mary Ellen (nee Moylan) and Mildred (nee Fountain) Long; brothers, Wendell, Edward and Charles Long. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today, at Davenport Family Funeral Home, 149 W. Main St. (Lake-Cook Road), Barrington. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Barrington VFW Post #7706, P.O.
