Samuel Johns Obituary

Samuel Johns Prayers for Samuel Johns, 84, of Crystal Lake, will be said at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, at Querhammer & Flagg Funeral Home, 500 W. Terra Cotta Ave., Crystal Lake. Mass will follow at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, 2515 W. Palatine Road, Inverness. The Rev. Patrick Brenner will be the celebrant. Born April 21, 1917, in Chicago, the son of Ezekiel and Hanna Mirza Johns, he died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at St. Luke's Hospital, Milwaukee, Wis. Interment will be privately held at Pine Lawn Cemetery, Manitowish Waters, Wis. Mr. Johns was a World War II Army veteran. A retired captain after 27 years with the Evanston Police Department, Mr. Johns was the Chief of Police in Crystal Lake for 24 years when he retired in 1993. He was a former member of the Evanston Optimist Club and past president of the North Suburban Chiefs of Police. Surviving are seven children, Daniel (Debbie) Johns and Samuel (Annie) Johns Jr. all of Hartland, Wis., Susan (Ken) Wolek of Crystal Lake, Pamela (Walt) Steffen also of Hartland, Jeffrey (Barbara) Johns of Delafield, Wis., Penny (George) Thompsen of Lake Zurich and Deborah Zimmerman of Mundelein; son-in-law, Mike Hausman of Delafield; brother, John (Eileen) Johns of Glenview; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, June (nee Fieberg), to whom he was married on Nov. 2, 1940, in Burlington, Iowa, and who passed away in 1995; daughter, Nancy Ritter Hausman; and sisters, Helen Johns and Elsie Jones. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today, and from 9 a.m. until the time of prayers Tuesday, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Shop With a Cop, P.O. Box 981, Crystal Lake, IL 60039. Thanks Sam for being a friend and fellow Police Officer. I worked under Sam for 13 years until he retired from the Evanston Police Dept. He was the best.

I'm a retired Police Officer from the City of Evanston. Sam hired me when I was 24 yrs old. I worked for him for only a few years when he retired and became Chief in Crystal Lake. I am very sorry on your lose and may our Lord smile upon him.
