Sylvester Gaydos Obituary

Sylvester A. Gaydos of St. Charles Services for Mr. Sylvester A. Gaydos, 87, will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, at the Norris Funeral Home, 100 S; Third St., St. Charles. Burial will be in Glen Oak Cemetery, Hillside. Visitation will be from noon until the time of the services Saturday, at the funeral home. Born April 14, 1917, in Ladd, Ill., the son of Arthur and Mary (nee Jordan) Gaydos, he died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2004, at Rosewood Care Center in St. Charles. Mr. Gaydos served in the Navy during World War II. He was aboard the USS Holland that left Pearl Harbor the day before it was bombed. Sylvester was a member of the American Legion. He played second base and shortstop on the Navy team and that team won the Pacific tournament during World War II. He was a minor league baseball player with the St. Louis Cardinals. For 30 years he was an accountant for the post office in Elgin. After retirement, Sylvester and his wife, Dorothy, moved to Port Charlotte, Fla., where they lived for 22 years, later moving to Reedsburg, Wis. They moved to the St. Charles area in 2004. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (nee Hemenway) Gaydos, whom he married on March 28, 1943; daughters, Nancy (Robert) Cichon of Delavan, Wis. and Patricia Syslo of Elgin; grandsons, Frank (Linda) Sullivan of Algonquin and Brian Sullivan of Champaign/Urbana, Ill.; and great-grandchildren, Kristine and Tyler Sullivan.
