Virgil was an extraordinary technician, a true artist in tuning and voicing the piano. A kind and thoughtful man, conversation with him was always a pleasure. Blessed be his memory!
With my sympathy to Helen and the family,

Unquestionably the very best tuner/technician I hope to encounter; a humble, pleasant, caring, unforgettable man, he was a living icon.

Virgil was a mentor to me, as he was to many of my colleagues in the Piano Technicians Guild. It was a privilege not only to work with him, but also to be considered his friend. His unwavering faith and his quest for excellence will continue to be an inspiration to me.

Virgil gave me piano lessons at Moody when I was a young girl. He was the best teacher I ever had. I will always remember his patience and encouragement.
My prayers are with his family.

Barb and I send our condolences to Helen and the family. You are in our prayers.
Virgil was my teacher, mentor, and friend for many years. I first studied piano tuning with him as a student at Moody and he continued to mentor and encourage me (and my staff) over the years. I always looked forward to seeing him at the PTG National Convention.
Thanks Virgil for the vital part you played in equipping me for my life's work.
May his memory be Eternal!

Virgil was a kind and thoughtful man, as well as an amazing piano technician. He was my piano teacher's favorite tuner, and he did wonderful work on my own piano. When I moved to SC from IL 15 years ago, I found a local piano tuner. When he heard I was from Chicago, he said, "Do you know Virgil Smith?" That's when I realized what a fine reputation he had among members of his "guild" across the country.

I will never forget the three wonderful years of instruction that Virgil gave me. More than pedagogy or technique was the desire, the love, the passion for music that he gave with each lesson.
