Wayne Atwater Obituary

Wayne G. Atwater

Wayne G. Atwater, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at the age of 92. Born on June 22, 1933, in Ohio, Wayne's life was a testament to dedication, hard work, perseverance, applied skills honed over a lifetime and the will to never give up.

Wayne lived over the years in Cleveland, Madison, Columbus, Crete, and Des Plaines, IL.

Wayne is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Gail (nee Padbury). Together, they built a loving family that includes their children, Brian Atwater, whose wife the late Colleen is fondly remembered; Beth and her husband, Patrick Scanlon; and Lori, with her husband, Joel Bautista. Wayne's legacy continues through his grandchildren, Michael, Mark, Cailin (Mitchell), Jack, Kathleen, and Amber. He is also survived by his sister, Joyce Makatura, wife of the late Steve; nephews, David and Gary Makatura; his cousin, Elliot Stava, and cousin Gordon Atwater's sons, Paul, Tom, and John.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Windsor (1986) and Mildred Atwater (1979), whose guidance and love helped shape the remarkable man he became.

A Navy veteran, Wayne's service to his country was marked by dedication and honor, that bring some great stories. Wayne went to Case Institute of Technology before and after his military commitment. He graduated from Ohio State University with a BSME degree in 1960.

He married Gail Padbury on October 28, 1961. Wayne dedicated his career to being a design/structural mechanical engineer, where he developed many machines to store and manufacture hardware. He had over 30 US Patents and much of his equipment is still up and running today. He was a skilled wood worker among many skills that he shared freely with all who inquired. He was affectionally known as "Chief" -a moniker he gave his father-in-law, but ended up being his. His project planning is legendary as he's the guy you want on your team. He did things the right way and expected that of all. He focused on learning his entire life. He was a man ahead of his time with computers and the software used for his engineering designs.

Wayne's life was one of loyalty, dedication, family, and class, qualities that were evident in his every endeavor. Whether it was his role as a devoted family man or his professional achievements, Wayne's impact on those who knew him was profound and lasting.

A memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2025, from 12:30 until time of Service at 1:30 PM at St. Martin's Episcopal Church, 1095 E. Thacker St., Des Plaines, IL 60016. Celebration of Life Luncheon immediately following service.
