Robert Luker Obituary

Robert Dixon, "Dick", Luker, 98, of Talladega Alabama passed away on Saturday August 23, 2025 at his residence surrounded by family and friends. A funeral service will be held at Mt. Ida Baptist Church on Tuesday August 26 at 3:00 p.m. with Bro. Kenneth Lipham and Pastor Charles Kelly officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Talladega. Visitation will be held at Usrey Funeral Home on Monday August 25, 2025 from 5-7 p.m.. Usrey Funeral Home will direct. Robert Dixon was born in Talladega, Alabama to Cohen Thomas Luker and Mary Leola Moore Luker on December 16, 1926. He attended Winterboro High School and graduated in the Veterans Class in 1947. He was a veteran of WW II serving his country in the Pacific Theatre. He was stationed in the Philippines on the Isles of Luzon and Palawan. Upon returning home from WW II he worked at several jobs through the years including many years at Stretch Tex, Alabama Industries for the Blind, and a brief stint at the Anniston Army Depot. However, his lifelong love was farming. He grew up on the family farm in Berneys Station and continued to part-time farm throughout his working career until 1972 when he chose farming as his full time occupation. He farmed 20 years growing soybeans, wheat, and grain sorghum. He retired from full time farming in 1992 and operated his fertilizer spreading business for another 16 years. He had many customers in Talladega and surrounding counties that he cherished as friends. Robert enjoyed growing his white field corn and giving it to friends and neighbors. He was able to do so right up until his passing. He was an honorary deacon at Mt. Ida Baptist Church, a founding member of the Berneys Station Volunteer Fire Department, and a member of the Talladega County Farmers Federation Board of Directors for almost 50 years. His church family, Federation Family, and VFD family were always close to his heart. Robert Dixon loved his family dearly especially his wife of 69 years, Dorothy Hammonds Luker, who he is survived by. He is also survived by his son, Bob (Mindy), grandchildren Cohen and Lauren, nieces Pam Luker Mitchel, Peggy (Gavin) McFaden, Cyndie Sanders Rhodes, and Pam Luker, as well as many cousins, great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cohen Thomas Luker and Mary Leola Moore Luker, brothers C.T. Luker and Joe Sanders, and nephew Tommy Luker. Serving as pall bearers will be Cohen Luker, Sam Staples, Jason Royster, Jabbo Smith, Hermanus Lemmer, and Hendrik Lemmer. Honorary pall bearers are Chris Highfield, Talladega County Farmers Federation Board of Directors, and Charles Wood (posthumously). Memorial donations may be made to Honey Word Bible at honeyword.org. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Robert Dixon's many caregivers, Lakeside Hospice, and Mrs. Pearl Wells. Online condolences may be offered at www.usreyfuneralhome.com. Usrey Funeral Home of Talladega is directing the services.
