Barbara Ann Andersen, 71
Barbara Ann (Woodburn) Andersen, 71, passed peacefully at her home in Kalispell on Jan. 30, 2026, after a courageous battle with an aggressive cancer. Born March 19, 1953, in
Oakland, California, and raised in western Washington, Barb was shaped deeply by the love of her grandparents, Lloyd and Carmel Bailey, whose refuge and warmth became the foundation for everything she would give others throughout her life.
Barb met her husband, Vic Andersen, at Everett Community College, and the two went on to attend Washington State University together. After raising her children, Barb earned her degree in education from the University of Montana and began a bold and remarkable 28-year career with Kalispell School District No. 5, teaching third and sixth grade and briefly leading the Gifted and Talented program. In retirement, she continued to volunteer in classrooms and tutor children in her home, ensuring no child who needed help was ever left behind.
Barb's impact would not have been possible without the tireless partnership of her husband, Vic, who spent countless hours alongside her - pressing cider in their yard, building classroom-sized spider webs for Halloween, and constructing immersive three-dimensional jungles for her students. For 52 years, he was her partner in every sense, and his love and support made her life's work possible.
One of the most selfless people you could ever meet, Barb donated quietly to causes large and small, helped more people with college tuition than anyone will ever fully know, and thought nothing of inviting strangers she had just met - at an airport or restaurant anywhere in the world - to come stay at her home in Montana. She always greeted guests with her homemade huckleberry baked goods and jellies, which she made and shipped to friends and family around the globe. She loved camping, hiking and biking through Glacier Park and shared a deep passion for world travel with Vic in their retirement years.
A devout Christian and longtime member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Barb gave freely of her time to cancer walks, suicide prevention walks, school initiatives and causes of social justice. Her faith was lived, not merely practiced but visible in every act of generosity she extended throughout her life.
She is survived by her husband, Vic Andersen; children, Holly Andersen (Endre), grandchildren, Aster and Erik; and Jacob Andersen (Lisse), grandchildren, Evan and Kelsey; and siblings, Bryan Parker, Jennefer Walter, Cheryl Woodburn and Carol Lawson.
She was preceded in death by both of her parents.
Barb's celebration of life will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 16, at the Flathead High School auditorium in Kalispell, which is open to all who knew and loved her. A reception with food and refreshments will follow. A livestream will be available. Details will be posted on Facebook. Barb was cremated; her ashes will be scattered by family at a later time.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations directed to the Flathead High School General Scholarship Fund for those with financial hardship. The family also asks that you keep her spirit alive - buy a child a pair of shoes, provide school supplies, or arrange a prepaid lunch account for a child in need. The world has lost one of its greatest champions for young people, and the most fitting tribute is to carry that torch forward.
