Rema Dixie Jong

1935 - 2025

Rema Dixie Jong, 90, of Greenwood, passed away peacefully on December 7, 2025. She was born on October 25, 1935, in Wartburg, Tennessee, to George C. and Georgia (Dilbeck) Hamby.

Known lovingly as "Nanny" by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Rema was a devoted matriarch whose home became a second home to the younger generations of her family. Over the last 20 years, she was a constant source of support, guidance, and love to her great-grandchildren, offering them a place filled with warmth, laughter, and care.

Rema worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Greenwood Village South for over 20 years, retiring in 1980. She poured her heart into her work and often "adopted" her patients as family, returning on holidays to visit and bring comfort. Her generosity and compassion extended well beyond her job.

She was known for her spunky personality and honest spirit-Rema never missed words and always spoke from the heart. Her life was grounded in a deep and abiding faith in Jesus Christ, and she never hesitated to share that love with others. Her strong faith was a guiding force in her life and a gift to all who knew her.

Rema also found great joy in the simple pleasures of life. She enjoyed crafting, painting, gardening, flowers, and cooking-each a reflection of her creativity and her love of nurturing others.

Nanny leaves behind to treasure her memory her children: Patricia (Kenny) Burton, Richard (Joy) Newberry, Tammy (Denny) Webb, and Michele (Joe) Jong; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 8 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 50 years, Chong M. "Jimmy" Jong; her siblings, Lee Hamby, Bessie Hardwick, Maynard Hamby, and Linda Powell; and her cherished grandsons, Austin, Noah, and Jaxton.

Family and friends are invited to gather for visitation on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., followed by a celebration of Rema's life at 2:30 p.m., at G. H. Herrmann Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 1605 S. State Road 135, Greenwood, Indiana. She will be laid to rest at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.

Memorial contributions may be made to Riley Children's Hospital, honoring Rema's life of faith, compassion, and service.

Rema Dixie Jong will be remembered for her bold heart, deep faith, and boundless love. Though her hands are at rest, her legacy lives on in every smile she inspired and every life she touched.
