Elizabeth Jackson Obituary

Elizabeth Sharpless Jackson of Kennett Square Elizabeth Sharpless Jackson, 93, died Wednesday June 1, 2011 at Crosslands, her residence in Kennett Square. She was the wife of Evans "Jay" Jackson who died in 2002 and with whom she shared 62 years of marriage. Betsy was born in London Grove, the daughter of G. Walter and Edith Sharpless. She graduated from the Westtown School and attended what is now Goldey-Beacom College. A birthright Quaker, she became a Presbyterian at marriage and was a longtime member of Kennett Presbyterian and the First Presbyterian, West Chester. She served many years on volunteer committees of the Chester County Hospital and the hospital auxiliary's Encore Shop. She also volunteered at the Brandywine River Museum. Betsy loved gardening. At her longtime home on Ridgecote Lane, at Hershey's Mill and at Crosslands her joy came from the outdoors - planting and nurturing her gardens. She was a charter member of the Seedlings Garden Club which she helped to establish in 1954. Betsy was a woman's "nine-holer" at the Kennett Country Club and spent fun-filled Friday evenings in the summer playing "hit and giggle" with Jay and their many friends at the club. Betsy and Jay lived in a wonderful time and place. Their close friends, who seemingly numbered in the hundreds, loved being with each other. Many of them took trips together and wintered in Florida in bunches. They, like others of their generation, worked hard, enjoyed life, and were family centered. Betsy is survived by her son, John R. Jackson and his wife Carlene of Kennett Square, and her daughter, Wendy Tyndall and husband Robert of San Francisco, Calif. She is also survived by grandchildren, Alexandra Downing and husband Michael, and David Tyndall - all of San Francisco; Todd Jackson and wife Kathy of Columbus, Ohio, Graham Jackson of Boulder, Colo., Lisa Brown and husband Mark of Newark; Paula DeLuca and husband Robert Gonsalves of Wilmington; Aimee Cordell and husband Randal of Newark, Danielle Filbert and husband Marc of Landenberg. She is survived by great-grandchildren, Archer Downing, Emily Cordell, Zoe Filbert, and Matthew Brown; and two sisters, Esther and Helen. A great-grandson, Jackson Walker Filbert, predeceased her. The family would like to thank the staffs of Audland and Firbank at Crosslands for their loving care of Betsy. She was very fond of all of them. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Chester County Hospital Foundation, 701 East Marshall Street, West Chester, PA 19380 A memorial service will be held in the William Penn Room at Crosslands, 1616 E. Street Road (Rt. 926), Kennett Square, PA 19348, on Sunday June 19th at 2 o'clock. Interment will be private. Dear Wendy,
I was very sorry to read of your Mother's passing in this week's Kennett Paper online. Our mothers were close friends growing up in the Kennett area. I remember you and your Mother from Sunday School and church at the Presbyterian Church in Kennett many years ago. I think our mothers played golf together in the 80's & 90's. My Mom moved to Florida in 1994, but always missed Chester County and her friends there. This is a milestone in a person's life and takes time getting used to. You have not "lost" her. She will be with you forever in the many wonderful memories you shared.
With Deepest Sympathy,
Jeffi (Payson) O'Kane West Fork, Arkansas
