Fred Carter Obituary

Fred F. Carter, formerly of West Chester Fred was born on March 23, 1933 to the late Fred Carter and the late Gertrude Dungey. After his education in the West Chester Area Schools, he enlisted in the Army. He served in the Korean War. Fred was wounded twice and received a Purple Heart. After his discharge from the Army, he became a talented fashion and commercial photographer and author. He was praised by such fashion experts as Bill Blass, Donald Brooks and Oscar de la Renta for his origination of the "Free & Easy" modeling method. "Free and Easy" is a 128 page modeling guide containing 328 of Fred's own photo illustrations and has been used by modeling schools across the United States. His second book, "A Guide for Models and Photographers," gives more of his innovative knowledge and skills. Fred's career took him throughout the United States lecturing on his modeling techniques and teaching modeling. Also, (not related to modeling), some of his photos have graced the covers of the TODAY magazine of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Fred was a tall lanky man whose distinctive cowboy hat seemed to be a part of him. He was married to the late Paula Carter. He passed away on September 11, 2014 in Worcester, Mass. He is survived by his stepmother, Freda M. Carter of West Chester, Pa., a half brother, Julius Foster of New Castle, Del., a step sister, Vivian Carter Thomas of West Chester, Pa., a son, C. Glenn Carter of Fla. (Tonya); a daughter, Svetlana Chernienko of Montreal, Canada (Tony); six grandchildren, Gabrielle, Mia and Tre of Fla.; Asante, Husani and Anastasia of Montreal, Canada; two nieces, three great-nieces, two great-great nieces, two nephews, one great nephew, one great-great nephew and many cousins. I lived next door to Fred, Paula, and Carter in West Chester at a place called Summit House.

Carter used to play with my daughter Erika, tho' she was about 5 years older. I remember Fred as easy-going, good-looking, and an affectionate father to little Carter.

Though we moved away in 1978, I often thought of the family, especially Carter, who was such a cute kid.

Blessings to you on your new journey, Fred; I'm happy that our paths crossed, albeit, briefly.

To all family and friends, Fred was a very special friend who taught me very valuable lessons for applying makeup for photography and stage which I continue to do. He had a unique ability, to make you understand exactly what he wanted and as a result every face that I did came out picture perfect. God bless him. With deep regrets and love Sandy meta.
