Harry J. Nickel

Harry J. Nickel, 90, of Christiana, Pa., passed away on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013.
He was the husband of the late Alice M. Pinkerton Nickel, who passed away on May 29, 2012.
He was born in Thompsontown, Pa., son of the late Joseph H. and Mary Miller Nickel.
He was employed by Armstrong Cork Co. for 37 years. Harry, along with his late wife, operated Nickel Mower Service of Christiana for 51 years.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving on the USS Boston in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
He was a life member of Christiana and Atglen fire companies, VFW Post 3575 of Quarryville, American Legion Post 865 of Christiana and the Pequea Valley Sportsman Club of Willow Street. He was a member of the Ancient Order of Croaking Frogs, Christiana Fire Police, PA Fire Police Association, and a past trustee and state delegate of the Christiana Fire Company.
He enjoyed hunting, gardening, traveling and spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by two children, Helen M. Shank of Quarryville, and Ronald L., husband of Lynn Snyder Nickel of Christiana; five grandchildren; eight great-grandsons; and three siblings, Earl, husband of Barb Nickel of Thompsontown, Pa., Alice Reich of New Providence, and Ruth Redford of Oxford.
He was preceded in death by nine siblings, Bill, Charles, John, James and Clyde Nickel, Emma Swartz, Alta Graybill, Mildred Lefever and John Watts.
Funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5, at the Shivery Funeral Home, 111 Elizabeth St., Christiana, Pa., with Pastor Jane DeFord officiating.
Interment will be in Quarryville Cemetery.
There will be a viewing at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, and again from 10 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday.
