Helen Reid Obituary

Dr. Helen G. Reid took off for heaven on March 21, 2020, leaving behind her sister, Rita Hipp, of TX, nephews and nieces, and bereft friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother-in-law Bill Hipp. Helen grew up in Cameron, TX, younger daughter of Frank H. and Grace E. Reid. She became interested in science/medicine in 5th-6th grade when her mom was being treated for cancer. Selected for a summer science program at Texas Woman’s University, she took their entire freshman chem course between 11th & 12th grade, which provided a head start on a chemistry degree at TWU and allowed for a Year Abroad at Univ. of Ghana. She completed BS and BA degrees at TWU and began graduate school in organic chemistry at Univ. of Iowa, after having difficulty getting employment as a female chemist. She was finally hired and enjoyed work as an environmental analytical chemist at Shell Oil’s New Orleans plant. She returned to grad school to study inorganic and physical chemistry, completing her Ph.D. in 1975. When she and her husband moved to southeast PA, she began teaching at West Chester University where she initiated and directed a Forensic Chemistry curriculum, which included the PA Equine Toxicology Lab, and placed chemistry interns in federal, state, and private labs in the Midwest and Northeast. Helen worked in several forensic labs over the summers, including NYC Medical Examiner’s office; ATF lab, Rockville, MD; and National Medical Services, Inc., Willow Grove, PA. She also traveled on multiple two-week missions’ trips to Central and South America with Medical Ministry International, providing assistance to licensed pharmacists at pop-up clinics in rural areas. Helen retired from WCU in 2005. She taught HS chemistry at Villa Maria Academy in Malvern from 2009-2014. In 2015 she moved from her home in West Chester to the Tel Hai Community in Honey Brook. For 38 years Helen taught 2- and 3-year-olds at Goshen Baptist Church. She also served in many other ways, including Missions Committee, Stephen’s Minister, Bell Ringing and food service for Salvation Army, housing many international graduate students as well as refugee students, and otherwise helped marginalized individuals in their times of need. She enjoyed hiking, playing the piano, playing bridge and group games, and anything that connected her with people, who then became friends. Helen’s focus in life was her Savior, Jesus. She became His hands and feet to whomever had need. Once the current medical crisis has passed, her sister and spiritual family warmly invite you to a Celebration of Life gathering at Goshen Baptist Church.

Helen was a sweet and kind friend of mine all through our school years in Cameron, Texas. Helen always shared a smile with all she met and was always willing to help when any of her friends needed help. I know she will be missed by all that were close to her. She is with her Lord and Saviour. God Bless.

I taught with Helen for a few years at Villa--what a wonderfully kind, compassionate, fiercely intelligent woman. It was an honor to be her colleague.

Helen was such a force of love and devotion to God and to helping others. Every time we gathered for prayer she always had a list of those she was helping for whom she wanted God's blessing. She was a bright light and a dear partner in ministry. I miss you Helen!

Dear Dr. Reid,
We cannot believe you are not here anymore. You touched every soul that you came across including ours. As I started my graduate career at West Chester University, you guided this student who was new to this country. You helped all of us, the new graduate students in so many ways. Anytime we needed a ride, you were there. When we did not have proper coats to face the brutal winter of Pennsylvania, you bought us winter coats. If someone did not have proper winter shoes, you bought them shoes. If someone needed a place to stay, you let them live in your house. You had always been there if someone was in any kind of need.
But it is not your help that we all will only miss. It is you, your positive attitude, your bright energy, your candor approach, the way you would look at things is what we will miss very much. You always looked at things in a different way. With your beautiful smile you always said, it's going to be alright'. Now all of us are going to miss that: it's going to be alright!' We will truly miss you! May God bring peace to you and your family!

Oh Helen... you were a bright light & beautiful soul that I had the privilege of knowing at Tel Hai for the past almost 5 years. I will always remember your servant heart, generous spirit and love of life. I will never forget my last encounter with you days before your passing, you were singing for us & pretending to play piano on the bedside table. You made us smile through our tears. One of our last full conversations, which was the day you moved into the nursing center, you wanted to be sure I received the voicemail about donating your dining money to those in needs. Wow! You are an example to us all of what it means to fully give of yourself... and you did so very humbly. I miss our daily talks in the Daily Brew (at Tel Hai). You always had an idea or a suggestion to make things better... you also genuinely cared about how I was doing. I miss your enthusiasm and love of each & every person you encounter. I miss your love of life. We love you, we miss you dearly & we pray for your family at this time. It was wonderful to meet your dear sister during this time. God bless you all.
