Robert Reber Obituary

Robert A. "Bob" Reber Sr., a beloved West Chester elementary and middle school teacher, died on March 28, 2013, after a brief illness. He was 80.
Mr. Reber was born Aug. 8, 1932, in Baltimore to Ben and Elizabeth Reber. He graduated from Malvern Preparatory School in 1950, where he was a standout lacrosse player. In 1954, he earned his bachelors of arts degree in English from what was then Villanova College.
While at Villanova, Mr. Reber earned pocket money by bartending at Kelly's, the popular campus pub. After two years in the U.S. Army, he started his career as an educator.
Mr. Reber taught for more than 30 years in the West Chester Area School District, beginning as a sixth-grade teacher at Fern Hill Elementary School. He joined the staff there in 1962, quickly becoming a student favorite. Mr. Reber's humor and discipline were blended perfectly in the classroom, keeping students engaged while continually pushing them to achieve more. Mr. Reber would tell his new students every fall that both his first and last names were palindromes – words that could be spelled correctly both forward and backward.
While at Fern Hill, Mr. Reber served as the president of the West Chester Area Teachers' Association, the union representing the district's teachers, and was lauded for his successful contract negotiations. When the district changed from the junior high school to middle school model in 1978, he became a sixth-grade math teacher at JR Fugett Middle School, where he taught until his retirement.
In 1993, Robert Reber and his loving wife of 53 years, Kathleen (Riemann), retired to Cape May, N.J., where he had worked as a lifeguard during his college summers and had vacationed with his family. In Cape May, the couple enjoyed 10 wonderful years of walks on the promenade, beautiful sunrises, and visits from friends and family. To spend more time with their grandchildren, they moved back to West Chester in 2003 where he lived until his passing.
In addition to his wife Kathleen, Mr. Reber is survived by his five sons, Bob Jr., Chris and his wife Nancy, Mark and his wife Krista, Matt and his wife Michele and Chet and his wife Leah. He is also survived by his 11 grandchildren, Patrick, Zack, Jake, Maddie, Alex, Grace, Libby, Brady, Charlie, Ali, and Carli.
Relatives and friends are invited to his Funeral Mass at noon on Friday April 5, at Ss. Peter and Paul Church, 1325 Boot Road, West Chester, Pa., with a visitation beginning at 11 a.m.
Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to, The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Lockbox 1352, P.O. Box 8500, Philadelphia, PA 19178-1352, which continues to provide outstanding care to the Rebers' grandson, Charlie.

In 1972, Mr. Reber fueled my love for math. I can still hear him sing his hit song “Division by Zero is Impossible!” It stayed #1 on the Fern Hill Top 40 charts for years. And he had some Elvis dance moves to go with it.
And I warmly remember the kindness of the entire Reber family that took me into their home during the summer of 1974 when my brother Kevin was paralyzed. I lived in a room with a squad of Reber boys. I was assigned to the top bunk – a place of honor. And that summer, Mr. Reber employed us to pick hundreds of dandelions – the secret ingredient for his famous homemade wine.
He was an awesome man that helped shape the lives of hundreds of kids. I smile every time I think of him.

Mrs. Reber,

I was sorry to hear of the loss of Mr. Reber. You may not remember me, but I'm the son of David and Larue Morgan and in the summer of the Watergate hearings I did some work for you around your home. I enjoyed very much the talks with your husband on Watergate and many other issues of the time. He pushed me to think at a deeper level than I was accustom to and for that I was grateful. He made quite an impression on a young 9th grader.

You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers at his passing. God bless you all.

Mr. Reber taught me math in 6th grade at Fugett Middle School in 1985. I remember him telling me that his name was spelled the same forward and backward. I also remember him teaching us about obtuse and acute angles. I never forgot those lessons. Mr. Reber was entertaining and memorable! He was a good man. I hope his family finds peace and comfort in the weeks ahead.

My prayers to the family. Mr. Reber was my 6th grade teacher at Fern Hill in 1968??. He always motivated us with his sense of humor. I will always remember the class trip to Peach Bottom Dam, his favorite spot. Rest in peace Mr. Reber!!

Sorry to hear about Mr. Reber. He had quite an effect on my pursuing the field of engineering and I could not have done it without some of the basics approach he provided me in 6th grade. To this day, I can look at a number and determine what it is divisible by for numbers from 1 to 20.
He had a very positive effect on many of his students and will be very missed. I wish my children had the same relationship I had with him for their teachers.

Mr. Reber was my teacher at Fern Hill in 1974-75. This was the last year 6th grade was still on the elementary level. He helped to guide my love of math, for which I will always be grateful. I remember the stash of root beer barrels he kept in his desk. I think Chris was in my class, too. God bless you all.

Kathleen and Family. We were blessed to have Mr. Reber teach us at Octorara Area High School the year following his graduation from college. As I recall that is when he met you (Kathleen) since your father was a physician here in Parkesburg. Our class just loved Mr. Reber. He was funny and easy to get along with..and fair. Blessings and our sympathy to all of you during this time of loss. Doris Hutzler Swaim Class 1960 OAHS

Oh Mr. Reber,...I remember Mr. Reber very well. He was my reading teacher, Fern Hill Elementary School, 1961,1962. I also remember very clearly his explanation about his name-the same frontwards and backwards. I thought wow, isn't that neat! There was also the day of the thesaurus comment. I always looked forward to ordering books from the monthly book club. He probably was commenting to the whole class, but I felt as though he was speaking to just me. He said, I guarantee you will use this book the rest of your life. I STILL have this exact copy that I ordered that day, and yes, I still use my thesaurus. My name is Roberta Rettew Iula. Fern Hill years were great. Mr. Reber was a part of that. I am very sorry to learn of his passing on. Thanks for reading.
