Ann Nichols Obituary

Ann Reeves Nichols, 84, passed peacefully in her sleep on June 3, 2025. She was born July 10, 1940, in Memphis, and graduated from Central High School in 1958. Her husband of 57 years, Gene Nichols, and her sister, Susan Gregory (Kimbrough), preceded her in death. She is survived by her children Beverly Long (Darrell) and Charlie Nichols (Laurie); grandchildren Kimberly James (Keith), Patrick Long (Tracey), Joshua Long (Blake), Sean Long, Rose Nichols, and Jill Nichols; and great-grandchildren Henry, Kip, Novelle, and Matthew.

As a young mother also working for Sears, Ann earned a BA in English and a Master's in Secondary Education from Memphis State University, and then taught English and French for Memphis City Schools. After her retirement she enjoyed a second career as the Activities Director at St. Francis Nursing Home. She also volunteered for several local organizations and enjoyed being an active member of the community.

Ann loved reading, running, nature, music, travel, and the arts, but above all she loved her family. Known as Nonnie to her grandchildren and all their friends, she would give sage advice, quote Shakespeare, and defuse any conflict with singing and joy. She warmly welcomed all friends and loved ones into her own extended family, who will miss her kind and patient heart.

Services will be held on Wednesday, June 18, at 1 pm, in the chapel at Trezevant Manor. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Trezevant Foundation, or to NPR, in honor of Nonnie's love for Public Radio.
