Dr. Charles T. "Ty" Tuggle III

Dr. Charles T. "Ty" Tuggle III obituary, 1982-2022, Memphis, TN

Charles Tuggle Obituary

Dr. Charles T. Tuggle, III passed away in the early hours of December 29th, 2022, at the age of 40.

Dr. Tuggle, born on October 25th, 1982, and known as Ty to his family, friends, and colleagues, was the beloved husband of Vera; father of son Alexander and soon to be father of daughter Mila; son of Charles and Jean Tuggle of Memphis, TN; brother to William (Miranda) of Atlanta, GA and Mary (Russell) of New York, NY.

Dr. Tuggle, an accomplished scholar, was educated at Christian Brothers High School in Memphis, and the University of Georgia, where he was awarded the Foundation Fellowship, UGA's highest academic scholarship. After graduating summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, and first in his class in Biochemistry, he spent a year at Kyoto University of Foreign Studies, where he mastered the Japanese language and fell in love with Japanese culture. Following this experience, Ty went to Yale Medical School, graduating with Honors, then completed his Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery residency at Yale New-Haven Hospital and a fellowship year in Reconstructive Hand Surgery at the Curtis National Hand Center in Baltimore. After Curtis, Ty began his career at LSU Health Sciences Center, where he was recently named an Associate Professor, with ambitions to build a world-class hand program in New Orleans, a city he quickly came to love.

With many specialty options as a plastic surgeon, Ty chose reconstructive hand surgery because of its surgical complexity and challenges, and because it allowed him to enable people who worked with their hands to regain their self-reliance, dignity, and worth. For Ty, there was a special beauty and purpose in restoring the functions of others' hands through the labors of his own. He also loved children and took deep satisfaction in his work at the Children's Hospital of New Orleans. Ty was born to be a surgeon following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Dr. Matthew Wood, and uncle, also Dr. Matthew Wood, both distinguished neurosurgeons. Dr. Tuggle was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, a widely published medical author, and chosen for UGA's 2020 class of "40 under 40."

With his many accomplishments and bright future, Ty fought a courageous two-year battle with brain cancer. For eighteen months of this battle, he continued to use his superb surgical skills to help those who needed him, returning to the Operating Room even after he himself had undergone brain surgery and throughout his chemotherapy treatments. When asked why he continued to work long, hard hours instead of indulging his personal interests, he always answered that the meaning of life is to be found in the voluntary adoption of responsibility and for him that was to make others' lives better.

Despite an all too brief life, Ty traveled widely, mastered Japanese, excelled at many of hand surgery's most challenging procedures, loved his family, married the woman of his dreams, and lived and died with dignity. He is survived by a heartbroken but incredibly proud family.

There will be a service to celebrate and honor Ty's life at two o'clock in the afternoon on Saturday January 7th at Hardin Hall in the Memphis Botanic Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you please consider a contribution to any of the following organizations:
Church Health Center Memphis, National Brain Tumor Society, Musella Foundation, or Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke

Ty was one of the brightest, nicest young men I've ever taught. He was in my homeroom and my English III class at Christian Brothers. He had that hypographia (not sure of the spelling) problem with his hand writing and I used to joke with him about being a doctor. He was a sweetheart!

I have so many fond memories of Ty from our time together while he was a fellow and especially from our week together in Dominican Republic. We shared a UGA connection as both my kids were Dawgs. I remember calling Ty a couple years ago when I saw his name while reading the UGA alumni magazine sitting in my rocking chair. He was listed in the "Forty Under Forty" section for distinguished alumni. We talked for a while and he closed with "thank you so much Dr Innis for all you´ve done for me and for reaching out." It was typical humble and respectful Ty. He was a wonderful person and physician.

I met Ty in medical school. I will always remember his honesty, work ethic, and intense passion for learning. He was always committed to making himself the best surgeon possible. He was taken far too soon, and I am so sad for his patients and family. I will always remember the enjoyment of trying to crack his serious demeanor, earning a big Tuggle grin like the one he has below. Rest in peace friend.

Ty was courageous, creative and always compassionate in everything he did. He was one of THE most promising young academic surgeons I have had the privilege to work with. May his memory be a blessing and inspiration, always. (Photo credit is of Mary Pink - a favorite from Ty´s own FB post.)

Ty was my Plastics Hand partner. I met him over a year ago as I took my first job at LSU. He never hesitated to support me and wanted me to excel. He generously shared all his wisdom and knowledge. I am saddened that he will no longer come into my OR and heckle me. I miss his humor and his laugh, his extraordinarily high expectations, his compassion for patients, and desire to perform surgery at the highest level. I am honored to care for his patients, and he lives on in all of us. We will forever remember his "Tuggle-isms" and keep his spirit alive in the OR and outside the hospital. My heart breaks for his family and to all of us who knew him. Goodbye, Ty. We love you so much.

This is so heartbreaking to hear. He saved my four year old grandsons hand three years ago and we are so thankful and grateful for his long hours (7) that he did, and because of him my grandson is able to play sports that he loves today. I´m not sure how we will break this news to our grandson who deeply loved him and had 100 confidence in him. Sending our parters and condolences to his family.

Our Burn Krewe´s light is a little bit dimmer.

Such a terrible loss to our world. Dr. Tuggle was the best of the best-super intelligent and didn´t pass up a chance to teach any of us. He was also my office hallmate, and always had a kind word everyday for me.

So sad about his loss. So young and an amazing human. My thoughts are with his family and friends.

I feel honored to have worked with Dr. Tuggle at UMC as one of the hand therapists to treat his patients. His work was impeccable and his patient´s outcomes always came first. He was a brilliant and talented hand surgeon and it was a pleasure to work with him and be a part of his team. His patients absolutely raved about him and so did we. I pray for eternal peace for Dr.Tuggle and for love and comfort to his family. Thank you Dr. Tuggle for your teamwork, trust and dedication to our patients.

We are so very sorry to hear about Dr. Tuggle. He operated on my husband´s hand back in March. He put a flap on. Amazing 13 hour surgery. Dr. Tuggle was so very kind and caring. We will forever be grateful to him. We are just heart broken. Please let his children know about all his hard work and dedication to his profession and mostly his patients. Praying for peace and comfort to all.
