David Allen Backer, age 71, resident of Arlington, Tennessee and husband of Susan Backer, entered eternal rest Saturday morning, July 19, 2025 at his home.
David was born August 15, 1953 in Torrington, Wyoming, the son of the late Alex Backer and Helen Wasmiller Backer. He graduated from Denver County High School and served as a Lieutenant for the United States Navy from 1971 until 1995, retiring after 24 years of service.
Mr. Backer was employed as a warden for CCA, a chaplain for the prison system and a hospice chaplain for many years and was a bus driver for 15 years before his retirement. He was married September 9, 1995 to Susan Schroeder Backer and was a member of Arlington Assembly of God.
David was an avid gun, knife and watch collector, hunter and fisherman and was a loyal Donald Trump supporter. He was a dedicated caregiver to his wife and enjoyed daily drives in his BMW convertible. The most peaceful moments he had were spent on the porch watching the sunrise and feeding his fish. David found solace in feeding all of God’s creatures including birds, his cat, squirrels, raccoons, chipmunks and deer.
Mr. Backer is survived by his wife of almost 30 years, Susan Backer of Arlington, TN; his daughter, Anna Pope of Alexandria, VA; two sons, David Backer (Dee) of Colorado Springs, CO and Christopher Backer (Racee) of Lemoore, CA; his stepdaughter, Sabrina White (Linwood) of Collierville, TN; his bonus daughter, Misty Backer (Rob) of Denver, CO; two stepsons, Steven Brown (Tasha) of Springhill, TN and Stanley Brown (Kaitlyn) of Arlington, TN; two sisters, Barbara Hansen of North Plat, NE and Renae Duckworth of North Plat, NE; fourteen grandchildren, Jalen, Savannah, Isabella, Niklas, Lukas, Isaak, Lynlee, Preston, Rylee, McKenna, Abiyah, Eliana and Uriyah; and his cat, “One Piece”.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Judy Lundgreen and Joni Backer; two brothers, Max Backer and Freddie Backer; and his granddaughter, Kayla Brown.
A visitation for Mr. Backer will be from 10 to 11 A.M. Tuesday, August 5, 2025 at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland. Funeral Services will be at 11 A.M. Tuesday, August 5, 2025 at the Peebles West Funeral Chapel at Oakland. Interment with Military Honors will be at 1 P.M. Tuesday, August 5, 2025 in the West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery in Memphis.
Those honored to serve as pallbearers will be David Backer, Christopher Backer, Stanley Brown, Steven Brown, Linwood White and Jalen Pope.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the American Cancer Society, 5101 Wheelis Drive, Suite 100, Memphis, TN 38117.
