Joseph Weller Obituary

JOSEPH CLEMENT WELLER went to be with his Lord and Savior Thursday, December 15, 2022, at the Baptist Reynolds Hospice House. He was born on February 6, 1939, in Dyersburg, Tennessee to Clement Vallandingham Weller and Claris Stanfield Weller. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Ann Weller Arnett, of Yazoo City, Mississippi.

Joe was raised in Clarksdale, Mississippi, and graduated from Clarksdale High School in 1957. He was named an All-State Trumpeter in Mississippi. He graduated from the University of Mississippi with a Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in accounting in 1961. He was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity.

One week after his graduation, Joe married the love of his life, Ann Falls, in Clarksdale. They moved to Memphis where he began his career with Minor & Moore Accounting Firm. In 1969, Joe helped found Morgan Keegan & Co., where he served for 37 years as the Chief Financial Officer and a member of the Board of Directors. Even after retirement, he kept his office and spent many hours there, generously giving of his time and knowledge. Joe was also an investor in the River Inn of Harbor Town.

Joe had a quiet, steadfast faith in God all his life. His generous and cheerful spirit will always be remembered by his friends and family. His civic and philanthropic accomplishments were great, but his godly character was greater. He and Ann joined Bellevue Baptist Church in 1961, where he was actively involved and served as a deacon.

Civically, he served as Treasurer and President of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and President of the Brooks Museum, Baptist Memorial Healthcare Foundation, and Financial Executives International. Joe also served on numerous boards, including the Campbell Foundation and Bellevue Foundation and was a trustee for the Baptist Memorial Healthcare System. He was very active as a member of the Ole Miss Accounting Professional Advisory Council for the Patterson School of Accountancy and was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in 2008.

Joe was a dedicated Ole Miss baseball (his favorite), basketball, and football fan, and a member of the prestigious Vaught Club. He loved attending Ole Miss sporting events with his children and grandchildren throughout the years. Joe himself was quite a good, natural athlete at tennis and especially golf. He even shot a 79 at the Pebble Beach Golf Course and was far too modest about it. He and Ann enjoyed many trips traveling throughout Europe and the Holy Land.

Joe was totally devoted to his family, particularly his eight grandchildren. He took great pride in mentoring them and reveling in their many accomplishments. He is survived by his wife, Ann, his daughter, Laurie Weller; his son, Joseph Thompson Weller (Lynn); his daughter, Lynn Weller Lyle (Bryan); and his grandchildren Christian Schneiter, Sloan Schneiter, Kate Weller, Joseph Weller, Liza Weller, Jason Lyle, Ellen Lyle, and Meredith Lyle.

The family requests that if you'd like to make a donation, please consider St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Baptist Reynolds Hospice House.

A memorial service will be held at Bellevue Baptist Church on Wednesday, December 21, 2022, in the Pollard Chapel at 3:00 p.m. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 3:00 before the service.

May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate a life well lived. Mr. Weller hired me @ Morgan Keegan in 1985. ALWAYS kind and professional. He would have on his jacket (100 degrees) and a diet coke.
