Julia Morrow Obituary

Julia Mayfield Morrow (Judy) passed away at home on May 15th following a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Born on August 20, 1933 in Chicago, Illinois to parents Isabelle and Paul Mayfield. The Mayfields soon relocated to Wilmington, Delaware where Judy attended Wilmington Friends School and excelled as a Mendenhall Scholar and captain of the cheerleading squad. Judy soon caught the eye of a classmate, Ed Morrow and they became inseparable after falling in love and entered into a marriage and loving partnership that lasted nearly 72 years, raising three children along the way.

Judy supported Ed every step of the way as he moved from Army duty in Bowling Green, Virginia, to a career at ALCOA with stints in Pittsburgh, Memphis, St. Louis, and finally back again in Memphis, where, when summoned again by ALCOA to a higher management job in Pittsburgh, they decided together that the Morrow family had settled into a wonderful life in Memphis and agreed to make it their permanent home.

Along with Ed, Judy adored her children, and they, her. They were her focus - countless sporting events that she never missed, carpooling duties which were the source of many funny stories. Always the head cheerleader, she penned numerous letters of support to each of her children as they transitioned to college and beyond, always filled with advice, encouragement and local news with news clippings enclosed. Her children fortunately still have many of these letters.

Judy had a remarkable innate ability for interior design and decorating. She expressed this talent with artistic flair in every home she lived. When she became an empty nester in the late 70's, she and Ed decided to put her talent to good use and launched Calico Corners in 1978, a decorative fabric shop that 46 years later remains today under a new name Fabrications. Customers and employees alike loved working with Judy as she was able to share her creative talents.

Ed and Judy early on discovered the beauty of Naples, Florida, buying a small house there in 1981, remodeling it, and hosting countless family get togethers over many decades and numerous July 4th parties complete with fireworks from the Naples Pier.

Along with her parents, Judy was preceded in death by her sister Ann Mayfield Porter. She is survived by her husband, Ed Morrow, her children, Steve Morrow (Nancy), Brooke Morrow, Lisa Morten (Greg), her grandchildren, Anne Jones (Hunter), Paul Morrow (Joy), Meredith Morten, Anna Morten, and 4 great grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Crossroads Hospice, especially Cassie Rhea; and Janice Mobley, Shirley Bowling, Stephanie Moore and Tomika Chaplin who provided exceptional, loving care.

There will be a private family service on Monday, May 20th with a memorial reception to be held later in the fall.

The family asks that donations in Judy's honor be made to West Cancer Foundation (P.O. Box 382638, Germantown, TN 38183), The Church Health Center (1350 Concourse Ave. Suite 142, Memphis, TN 38104), or a charity of your choice.
