Malcolm Rice Obituary

Malcolm Kyle Rice of Memphis, Tenn., passed away peacefully on Sept. 29, 2024. He was born Jan. 23, 1933 to John and Lena Rice in Troup, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, John Rice and Donald Rice, and his sister, Faye Smith. He is survived by his loving wife, Bernadette; his children, Richard Rice and Lisa Hassell; nine grandchildren, and multiple great grandchildren.

After serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, Kyle went on to have a long, distinguished business career as an entrepreneur. He also raised cattle for decades at Circle R Ranch in Mississippi.

Kyle led a very full life, maintaining his many interests and hobbies even past his 90th birthday. He was a voracious reader, a world traveler, an excellent grillmaster, a passionate golfer, and a regular contributor to various charities. Additionally, Kyle was a member of the Ambassador Club for Memphis Athletics since 2006, and he was a dedicated U of M basketball fan. Go Tigers!

Above all, Kyle had a love for the outdoors. At his beloved Mississippi ranch, "The Creeks," he and his wife enjoyed gardening, fishing, and tending to their horses. They meticulously cared for the property, maintaining the serene beauty of multiple lakes and tree-covered trails, which were appreciated by human and animal friends alike.

In keeping with Kyle's request and his humble nature, no formal services will take place. Instead, cheer on your favorite team, enjoy a glass of wine, or spend some time in nature with his memory in mind. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.

Such a bright, kind, generous, and happy man. So many good memories! Among my favorites was when he and Bernadette hosted Jim, Kiyomi, Malia, and Koa for a few days at the Creeks.

I was lucky enough to know Kyle for 15 years as my stepfather-in-law, and I´ve never met a more generous man. I have the fondest memories of him teaching this city girl how to fish, drive a four-wheeler, take care of horses, and use a bush hog to clear land. He had the kindest Southern manners, he watched a lot of sports with us over the years, and he was close with our dog, Otis, who also lived a long life. He was always "sweet Kyle" with my mother-in-law and we were so proud of his recent hole-in-one. I will miss Kyle a lot but I am grateful to have had him in my life. xoxo

I worked for Jim Gilliland for many years--he was Kyle's attorney. Kyle was a gracious Southern gentleman who had great wit, grace, style, and a kind heart. He was a fine man and will be missed by many.

We enjoyed so much sitting with Kyle and Bernadette at the Memphis games. He was a great man that was full of life. We talked basketball strategy and other life lessons. He was always checking in on our family and our business. He was not only a business success, but just an overall great guy. We will miss him.

I first met Kyle when he hired me as a consultant to review his private business schools to assure that they met accreditation standards. We developed a deep friendship that lasted for 50 years.
