Ray Beard Obituary

Ray Beard, 103, passed away on November 27, 2024. She was born on September 9, 1921, in Grenada County, Mississippi. She was raised on a farm with her two older sisters, Mavis and Sue. After high school graduation, she and a cousin, Alean, came to Memphis to attend business College. Ray started work at Corn Products Company, later working for Nolan Pictures and ending her secretarial career with Gay Michie Company. One providential day Ray was showing off a new pair of red shoes to some friends. A handsome young man who was there told her if she would wear those shoes, he would take her out. She accepted the offer. His name was Neil. Ray and Neil were married and in 1947 they welcomed a bounding, orange haired baby boy into the world. His name was Jimmy. Mother loved all of her family and friends, and that love was reciprocated. She loved the Lord from her youth to her death and never wavered in her spiritual journey. A visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., Monday, December 2, 2024 at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave., Memphis TN. Any memorial may be given to the St. Stephen Methodist Church, 3981 Macon Rd., Memphis TN 38122 or the charity of the donor's choice.

Aunt Ray and my dad, her nephew share the same birthday so for the past 13+ years we as a family have been celebrating her birthday in Memphis. She was full of life and was always very loving. I enjoyed my years living and visiting her and Jimmy in Memphis and later when I moved away. She will be greatly missed and my heart goes out to Jimmy.

My Aunt Ray was such a great inspiration in my life. She always had a smile for everyone! Aunt Ray once told me not to grieve when she was gone but to sing, When the Saints Go Marching In! I love you Aunt Ray!
Jimmy, we are so very sorry for your loss. We are praying for you as you navigate through this difficult period of time.

I worked with Ray Beard's husband, Neil Beard, between 1957 and 1961 at Lowenstein's East in Memphis. Neil always spoke fondly of his wife, and I am pleased to learn that she lived a long and happy life. Kenneth T. Jackson
