Robert McCowan Obituary
Deacon Robert "Junior" McCowan, 98, of Athens, TN, peacefully transitioned into eternal rest in September 2025. Born July 17, 1927, to the late Timothy and Arliss McCowan, he was one of 17 siblings and lived a life marked by faith, service, and love for family.
He was married for 78 years to his devoted wife, Mattie Smith McCowan. Together they raised seven children: Mayor Al (Christina) McCowan, Pastor Dr. Harold McCowan, Evangelist Richard (Patricia) McCowan, Pastor Dr. RJ McCowan, Minister Perry McCowan, Minister Beverly (Rick) Campbell, and James (Anna) Arnwine.
A faithful member of Light of Life Faith Ministries International for over 40 years, he served as Chairman of the Deacon Board and Head Trustee. He was a retired Captain of Police and Supervisor with the McMinn County Highway Department. Known as a skilled carpenter, gardener, mechanic, and community servant, his generosity and love touched countless lives.
He is survived by his wife, seven children, 24 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, brother Chester McCowan, sister Pauline Mayotte, Special Sister in Law Minnie Long, and Judy McCowan, Brother-in-laws Jimmy Simpson, Jackie Mayotte, Melvin Oggs and many other loving relatives and friends.
Home Going Celebration Service will be held a Sunday, October 5, 2025 at 3:00 p.m. at Light of Life Faith Ministries in Athens, TN., with Pastor Rev. Harold McCowan and Pastor R. J. McCowan officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service on Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., at the church. Interment will follow the service at Hammonds Cemetery.
