Caroline Doreste Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Caroline Doreste, 86, passed away Tuesday, March 20, 2007, in Newport News. She was raised on her parents' farm in the outskirts of Sagua la Grande, Cuba. She attended El Apostolado School and the University of Havana, from where she received a Doctorate in Education. Mrs. Doreste married Octavio Doreste in 1947 and settled in Havana, where Octavio practiced patent law. They immigrated to the United States in 1963, and settled in Cherry Hill, N.J. Caroline attended Temple University, where she obtained a Master's degree in Spanish Literature. She taught at LaSalle College, Augustana College Summer Program in Spain, and Camden County Community College, prior to becoming lead social worker for the Camden School district Board of Education. She retired in 1991. She was an avid traveler, having visited Mexico, Spain, England, Italy Greece, Morocco, Australia, and New Zealand. She was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, Octavio Doreste. Survivors include her daughter, Alina Doreste-Johnson and her husband, Jim, of Alexandria; two sons, Mario Doreste and his wife, Margarita, of Newport News and Albert Doreste and his wife, Barb, of Delran, N.J.; and five grandchildren, Brian Doreste, Lauren Doreste, Marcela Doreste, Nico Doreste and Monica Doreste. Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
