Charles Wentworth Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Mr. Charles Chancellor Wentworth II died on Aug. 4, 2007. Born in Roanoke, Va. on Dec. 17, 1931, Mr. Wentworth, son of Charles and Madaline Wentworth, was a resident of the peninsula since November, 1961. Mr. Wentworth received his undergraduate and law degree from the University of Virginia. Mr. Wentworth served in the United States Navy, attained the rank of lieutenant, and served as executive officer of his ship. Mr. Wentworth was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. Mr. Wentworth was a former member and past president of the Peninsula Symphony Orchestra, member of the Hampton Roads Sertoma Club, past president of the Peninsula Fine Arts Center, member of the Peninsula Estate Planning Council, former member of the Virginia Trial Lawyer's Association, member of the Thomas Jefferson Society, and served as secretary and director of the Newport News Bar Association. Mr. Wentworth was a past instructor at St. Leo College, former Administrative Hearing Officer appointed by the Virginia Supreme Court, and a member of the Virginia State Bar Association. Mr. Wentworth was a past chairman of the Newport News Board of Zoning Appeals, member of the Hampton Roads German Club, and member of James River Country Club. Mr. Wentworth is survived by his wife, Ann Speegle Wentworth; sons, Charles Chancellor Wentworth III and Lemuel Lowe Doss III and wife, Mary, all of Richmond; daughters, Laura Doss Geddy and husband, Vernon of Williamsburg and Mary Pace Martin and husband, Mike of Rocky Mt.; a sister, Madaline Wentworth Baker and husband, Allen of Pagosa Springs, Colo., and six grandchildren. A memorial service will be conducted at 4 p.m. today at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to a favorite charity. Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
