Charlie W. Daniels

NEWPORT NEWS - Charlie W. Daniels, age 74, passed away at home Sunday, January 23, 2005, after a valiant struggle with cancer. A native of Merritt, N.C., he had been a resident of the Peninsula since 1963. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force stationed in Guam during the Korean War. He then attended East Carolina University. Later, he retired from Westinghouse Electric Supply Co. with 25 years of service. At that time, he and his son, David, founded Daniels Electric Supply Co. of Tidewater, Inc. A member of First United Methodist, he attended the Bithynia Class. He is preceded in his death by his parents, Oliver and Zora Daniels; his sister, Myrtle Guthrie; and his brother, Jack Daniels. He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Shirley. His children are Charlie Daniels, Jr. and his wife, Wanda of Smithfield; David Daniels and his wife, Darlene of Hampton; and Robin Goforth and her husband, John. Grandchildren are Tiffany Daniels, Clifton Daniels, Robbie Wink, Jamie Wink, Jodi Goforth, Jennifer Brantley and Meagan Brantley. The family will receive friends at First United Methodist Church Wednesday, January 26 beginning at 4:00 p.m.; a funeral service will follow at 5:00 p.m. by Reverend John T. LeGault. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, January 27, at 1:00 p.m. at Trent Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery in Merritt, North Carolina. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to First United Methodist Church Building Fund, 10246 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, Va. 23601.
