Christine Benfield Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Christine H. Benfield entered into everlasting life to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, March 5, 2005. A Peninsula resident for 58 years, she was one of six children of Boyd and Bertie Hollar and was born in Rhodhiss, N.C., on Dec. 23, 1922. After graduating from the Virginia School of Hair Design, she was a hair dresser for 53 years. She loved to serve others and performed over 2,000 hours as a volunteer at James River Nursing Home and received numerous awards for her service. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where she served for many years in the nursery on Sunday and Wednesday evenings. One of her greatest loves was to rock and care for babies in the church nursery. Christine was preceded in death by her husband, John Benfield Sr., and an infant daughter, Linda Jean. She leaves to cherish many loving memories a son, John Benfield Jr. and his wife, Violet; a daughter, Susie Cash and her husband, James; a sister, Barbara Ann Smith and her husband, Bob; a brother, Wayne Hollar and his wife, Nina; six grandchildren, Chris Cummings and her husband, Mike, Sherry Schlosser and her husband, Doug, Linda Skok, Michelle Benfield, Brett and Scott Cash; nine great-grandchildren, John Michael and Lauren Cummings, Kayleigh, Caleb, and Seth Schlosser, Nicole, Cholea, Jacob and Heather Skok; and many nieces and nephews. She also had many loving friends. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 8, at Peninsula Funeral Home. A service to celebrate her life will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 9, at Calvary Baptist Church by the Rev. Stephen Crane. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. Donations may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 4700 Huntington Ave., Newport News, VA 23607.

Susie & James - Am so sorry to hear about the loss of your mother, Susie. Remember the time you & your mom were visiting Oahu when i lived there & I got to see you? And you had a leg cast on or something? Your mom was a sweet lady. But then again, you were a sweet daughter to her, too! Take care.
