David Montague Obituary

HAMPTON - David Nicholls Montague departed this life on Wednesday, July 1, 2009, after a courageous battle with numerous health issues.
David was a lifelong resident of Hampton and spent much of his life serving the community he loved. Born on Aug. 23, 1936, David was the son of the late E. Sclater and Suzanne Garrett Montague. He attended Hampton Public Schools through 9th grade and graduated from Episcopal High School in Alexandria. After EHS, David attended the University of Virginia for undergraduate and law school studies. He completed a B.A. in Psychology in 1958 and an L.L.B. from the School of Law in 1961. During his school years, David also served as the Editor of the Cavalier Daily, the managing editor of Virginia Law Weekly, a member of the Varsity Wrestling team, as well as a member of the Student Council, Beta Theta Pi, the IMP society, TILKA, and the Raven Society.
Following a brief stint in the U.S. Army, David returned to Hampton and practiced law from 1961 until his retirement in 2002. He then entered the field of real estate and was working for Virginia Commonwealth Realty when he earned his broker's license. David served as Mayor of Hampton from 1971 through 1974 and was a City Council member from 1974 until 1976. In addition, David served on the Virginia State Council of Higher Education from 1970-1972, the Board of Visitors at UVA from 1980-1984, the Virginia Public Beach Commission from 1983-1987 and as President of the Peninsula Industrial Finance Corporation from 1988-1993.
David is survived by his wife, Kathann Woodall Montague; daughter, Suzanne Montague Hamilton and her husband, David; son, David Nicholls "Bo" Montague Jr.; Heather Hollomon Warf, all of Hampton; Holly Hollomon Schiffrin and her husband, Jon, of Stafford; and granddaughters, Elly, Hannah, Lindsay, Lauren and Jordan.
A celebration of David's life is planned at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 5, 2009, at Wesley United Methodist Church, 2510 North Armistead Avenue, Hampton, Va., with a reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to LifeNet Health, 1864 Concert Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23453-1903 or lifenet.org.

November 13, 2014

Dear Suzanne and Bo,
My husband, George, and I had dinner tonight (Nov. 13, 2014) with Barb and Larry Hagan, and Barb told us that she had been able to leave a message of condolence for you online. I wish I had thought of that when we first learned of your father's death...and then your mother's...about three years ago. To explain...We were also in the army in 1961 and 1962 along with the Montagues and Hagans, we knew them well, and spent many happy times together. We want you to know how much we thought of your parents. We are so sorry for your loss, and we send our kindest thoughts to you both. We so enjoyed the time the three couples spent together, and have many fond memories of the two of you. The six of us rarely went anywhere without both of you...you were both adorable children. May you have peace in your hearts, knowing your parents loved you dearly.
With love from afar,
Linda and George Carey

To Suzanne and Bo,
My husband and I knew your parents very well when we were in the Army in San Antonio, Texas in 1961-62. That "short stint" seemed like forever in those days as we all were extended for an extra year due to the raising of the Berlin Wall. After we were all home, we took a trip together to Las Vegas and planned to do others, but somehow we lost track of each other - but they were often in our thoughts. We were just reminiscing about them last weekend, so I googled David to see if we could get in touch. I was shocked and terribly sad to come upon two obituaries. It's so hard to believe that two such special people could die so young. We just hope that their lives were everything they hoped for.
Our love to you two,
Barb and Larry Hagan

Dearest Kathann,
When you married David, you brought a gift into our family -- we will miss him. David's wisdom and love have been important to us. Mother thought so highly of him and I appreciated his presence and support during some challenging times. We are better people for having known David Monatgue. Know that God is holding you in the palm of His hand as you pass through this season of fresh greiving. Love, Wendy

I think the extra chairs required at the memorial service and the number of people who have already signed this guest book are a statement about how many people David touched during his lifetime. He will live on in many, many memories. My thoughts and prayers are with my mom, Bo, and Suzanne.

I met David in 1968 when I joined the Republican Party of Hampton. We became good friends. I learned so much from him. When he spoke in that wonderful voice you listened closely because you knew that you would be hearing something of value. I will always remember the sixties and seventies as a very special time in my life and David was a big part of that. He was a wonderful man and the world is a better place because of him and I am a better person for having known him.
My deepest sympathy to his family.
