Dennis SAYLOR Obituary

ASHLAND, ORE. - At 3:45 p.m., on Feb. 24, 2012, Dennis Livingston Saylor lost his battle with primary lateral sclerosis, and slipped into his Savior's arms with a quiet sigh while surrounded by members of his loving family.
Born Mar. 5, 1944, to Victor and Audrey Saylor, Denny graduated from Conemaugh Township High School in Johnstown, Pa., in 1962. He joined the U.S. Army in 1966. He earned his bachelor's degree in education from Methodist College while in the service, and then continued on to Officer's Candidate School. He worked in logistics, military intelligence, was a company commander in Korea, and was a senior instructor for the Officer Advanced Course at Fort Eustis in Virginia. He was chief of ULCC in Rome, Italy. Denny was a Vietnam veteran and was awarded the Bronze Star for his service in-country and many other awards for his outstanding service.
After retiring from the Army, in 1990, with the rank of lieutenant colonel, Denny worked as a defense contractor for several years, while earning his master's degree in education and human resource development. Denny briefly taught middle school in Newport News, Va. In 1993, Denny, LaDawna and several other dedicated veterans, who cared so much for their own broken warriors, developed and opened a homeless veterans shelter, VET'S, Inc. He worked tirelessly for three years, taking a year off to manage the shelter.
Denny brought LaDawna back to Rogue Valley in October 1999, where they ultimately settled on a hilltop in Ashland, Ore. This is where he spent his final days. He was quadriplegic and had the best of care.
Denny leaves his wife of 28 years LaDawna; daughter, Sharyn (Russ) Young; sons, Scott Allen (Kathie), Steve (Lindsey), Scott Geoffrey (Gloria), and Michael (Rachel) Sinks; sisters, Ruby (Lynn) Poole, and Malinda (Dick) Lloyd; brother-in-law, Jerry Kucera; 23 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and four faithful companions.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Audrey; father, Victor; brother, Victor; and sister-in-law, Cheryl Kucera.
We will miss you sweetheart, father, grampa, friend and mentor.
Funeral services were held at 3:30 p.m. Friday, March 2, 2012, at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home in Ashland, Ore. Inurnment, with full honors, will be in Arlington National Cemetery at 3 p.m., June 6, 2012. For more information, call (541) 482-6176. I'll never forget Dennis. He did me many good turns including getting my secretary back during the T-School reorganization, getting me a job in retirement and generally being a good fellow as with out presentation team for Gen Lilly's outdoor presentation. I went to his wedding and wish he were still here to celebrate it.
God Bless him!

We were saddened to see the Obituary in the Daily Press. I did not know you had moved west. I recall attending the wedding 28 years ago when Denny and I worked at the T school and later at MPRI. Denny also got me a job at RSVP. Denny was a great guy and I'm sure his loving ways will be missed by all in his family and circle of friends.
