NEWPORT NEWS - Doris Rea Kline McNabb, a native and lifelong resident of Newport News, died in the early morning hours of March 2, 2009, at home. She is now with her heavenly Father.
Doris Rea was born on July 31, 1928, the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence B. Kline, who preceded her in death.
She graduated from Newport News High School in 1945 and went to work for NACA, which is now NASA, until the birth of her first child, Harris B. Pate III. She returned to the work world, in 1965, at Langley Air Force Base.
In the 32 years that she worked for the government, she received her B.A., with honors, from St. Leo College, and an M.A. from Golden Gate University.
Mrs. McNabb was a lifetime member of Ivy Memorial Baptist Church, where her parents were founding members. She was also a member of the American Legion Post 25, VFW Phoebus, and the Newport News Moose Lodge Auxiliaries. She loved working with flowers, and spent much time in the yard before she became too sick.
She is survived by her loving and caring husband of 36 years, Carl D. (Mac) McNabb; three children, Harris B. Pate III and wife, Linda, Doris Catherine Pate, and William E. Pate; a very special grandson, Harris B. Pate IV (Brock); stepsons, Tony McNabb and wife, Kathy, Michael and Ross Cain; and her faithful four legged companions, Patsy and Linda.
The family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation to Dr. John Brady and Dr. Marshall Cross, for their excellent care during her illness. Also, sincere appreciation is extended to Riverside Hospice, for their excellent care rendered by Jane Bean, Maryanne Pasake, Sharon Urban, Mary Evans and Monica Stokeley; special appreciation for Ruth Bazemore's care during Doris' long illness.
