Edna S. Malone

1942 - 2021

HAMPTON – Edna Smith (Sills) Malone, 79, passed away on December 8, 2021 at Sentara CarePlex Hospital, following a long battle with several health issues. Her life began October 8, 1942 in Newport News, VA born to the late Troy Smith, Sr. and the late Olivia Mangum Smith.

Edna grew up in the Aberdeen Gardens area of Hampton, VA and attended Aberdeen Elementary, Y.H. Thomas Junior High, and graduated from George P. Phenix High School in 1961. She was a 1965 graduate of Bennett College and a 1971 Graduate of Hampton Institute (University). Edna began her long teaching career in Hampton City Schools in 1965, with her first assignment at Aberdeen Elementary School. She worked for Hampton City Schools until her retirement as a Reading Specialist.

An amiable and outgoing person, Edna established many friendships. She was a member of several civil and social organizations: CHUMS, Inc.; The Links Incorporated; The Red Hat Society; and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Edna enjoyed traveling, shopping, cooking, entertaining, crafting, and spending time with family and friends. She was a woman of poise and class, which was exemplified in her stylish dressing, eclectic jewelry, and sassy hats. An active member of Joynes Road Church of God in Hampton, VA., Edna was a faithful supporter, giving of her time, talents and gifts. Edna found great fulfillment in helping others.

Edna was preceded in death by her husband of 19 years, Roland H. Malone; her parents; and brother, Theodore Henry Smith. She is survived by her devoted daughter Tiffani Sills Brown (Stephen L.) of Baltimore, MD; grandsons Miles and Shane Brown of Baltimore, MD; her sister and caregiver Linda Good of Hampton, VA; her brother Troy Smith, Jr. (Treganza) of Hampton, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Edna leaves a loving family and a large circle of friends who rallied around her during her illness. Edna may be viewed at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel (1601-27th Street, Newport News, VA 23607) on Saturday, December 18, 2021 from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM. Per Edna's wishes, there will only be a viewing (no traditional service). A private burial will be held at a later date, therefore please refrain from sending graveside flowers.
