Brother Eric Burden was an awesome man, and football coach. We coached high school football at Thomas Jefferson High School in Alexandria, VA from 2007-2010. I learned a lot from coach Burden. Rest In Peace my Fraternity Brother. Long live The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.

I think we were all skeptical when we found out that NNHS was going to be an integrated high school. However, whoever selected Eric to be the first person of color to enter NNHS made the right decision. Eric fit in with everyone. He always seemed to be laughing and smiling. He was one great person.

Eric was one of my older first cousins. What I remember most about him from when I was a child was that he would act like a monster and chase me and Lolo around the house. I don't know about Lolo but I actually felt scared. In later years Eric and I talked more frequently and he would not hang up without telling me that he loved me. Now instead of thinking mostly of how he scared me I think of how he loved me. Sending prayers for the family.

Eric blazed the trail for many of us who attended Newport News High School. Always a gentleman. Always calm and cool. I am blessed we were able to connect in our later years. His love of writing and his concern for future generations was always on display. You will be missed.
To the Burden family, his footprints will forever be etched as a part of our history at Newport News High School. My caring thoughts will be with you during this difficult time.

The Burdens lived on Kentucky Avenue many years ago. They lived in the house next the Sparks. I remember seeing Eric a while back when he visited Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Arlington, Va. I extend my sincere condolences to the Burden family. I pray that God will comfort and give you the strength that you need at this time and as you go forward with your lives. Earth has no sorrow that Heaven can not heal.

Eric was the first and only African American who integrated Newport News High School and he was an all Star Athlete who put Newport News High School on the map not just because of his athletic abilities but his Kindness and his Caring, and his Wisdom and his Willingness to help anybody and everybody who were his Classmates in any way that he could. His brother Larry followed him into Newport News High School and both men were men of exceptional Character and made a difference in my life and the life of so many others. May Eric's Memory Always Be For A Blessing and may we do Acts Of Loving Kindness in his Memory!
