Frances Stefanis Obituary

Frances Bouras Stefanis, 94, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 6, 2021. She was born on September 25, 1926 in the Greek village of Domiani in the prefecture of Evrytania. She was the daughter of the late George and Vasiliki Bouras. Frances was predeceased by her loving husband, George Soterios Stefanis, her brother, George Harry Bouras and nephew George Harry Bouras, Jr.

In 1948, Frances, her mother and brother fled the Communist Insurgency of Greece, for America. They joined her father, who had previously fled Greece, in Pulaski, Virginia, where he had opened a restaurant. Frances met and married George Soterios Stefanis in 1949. They settled in Winchester Kentucky and moved to Lexington in 1963.

She was employed with Morton Junior High School, Fayette County Board of Education, for over twenty five years. She was a member of Panagia Pantovasilissa (Holy Mother Queen of All) Greek Orthodox Church, where she was honored to make the prosphoran (alter bread) for the Divine Liturgies and Koliva for the Orthodox memorial services. She was a member of the Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society, The Daughters of Evrytania and the Eastern Star. She was also an Honorary Kentucky Colonel.

Frances was a wonderful gardener and cook. She was especially known for her fig trees and her Greek breads and pastries. She loved being in the kitchen and welcomed all into her home for demonstrations of her cooking techniques and to share her delicacies.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory her son, Dr. George Stefanis, his wife, Cheryl and granddaughter, Alexandra, of Macon, Georgia, her daughter Maria, her husband, Thrasyvoulos Maroulis, of Norfolk, Virginia, her sister-in-law, Niki Bouras, her niece, Vicki Boudouris, her husband James and their children Dean and Sophia, of John's Creek, Georgia, as well as many other close family members.

The family will receive family and friends at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, East Main Street, Lexington, Kentucky, Tuesday, July 13, 2021, at 6:00 PM, followed by the Orthodox Trisagion Service at 8:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at Holy Mother Queen of All Greek Orthodox Church, 3001 Tates Creek Road, Lexington, Kentucky and will be officiated by the Very Reverend William Redmon and the Very Reverend George Wilson. Interment will be in The Lexington Cemetery, West Main Street, Lexington, Kentucky.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully request that memorial donations be made to Holy Mother Queen of All Greek Orthodox Church, 3001 Tates Creek Road, Lexington, Kentucky 40502.

So sorry to hear of Frances's passing. She was my mom's cousin (Dorothy Boures Ramey). So enjoyed her when she would visit the Spokane, Washington, area. I was also very lucky to stay with at her home in Lexington years ago when I came to Kentucky to go to my niece, Jennie Ramey's college graduation. It happened to be Derby time and Frances hosted a dinner that was amazing. She was a very special person and will always be remembered fondly.

We were sorry to hear about the passing of dear Frances Stefanis. She was the cousin of my mother, Dorothy Ramey (Boures). My family and I had the pleasure of meeting her for the first time, and staying with her in Lexington about 18 years ago. What a treat to stay with her, and hear all the stories about my grandfather, who was her uncle Nick. I was only 9 months old when he passed, so I didn't know him. It was such a joy to hear all the fabulous stories Frances shared about my grandfather and his family. Her generous hospitality was appreciated by us all. Her cooking was stellar, and she was a great tour guide showing us around Lexington. Frances was a kind, generous, and beautiful woman. I feel so blessed to have spent that time with her. While we lived thousands of miles apart, my family and I will always cherish the time we spent with her in Lexington. Our condolences to her family. Frances will remain in our hearts forever.

So many of my favorite childhood memories are at Aunt Frances's house - playing in her garden and coming to the kitchen to eat the fruits or vegetables we picked (plus some cookies or pastries of course). We also played "school" in her basement and taught her questionable English words and phrases. We even put her through the paces of gym class! She was such a good sport and so loving to me, Liza and Foster. Aunt Frances has given so much to me and countless others and I will cherish her forever. My love and sympathies go out to the family. xx

With heartfelt sympathy and sorrow to Aunt Frances' family, friends and all who knew her, I feel priviledged to have had a very close relationship for 45 plus years. Our daily phone calls and weekly visits kept me anchored in my own life. I owe so much to Aunt Frances and missed her everyday when she moved from Lexington. She will forever be in my thoughts.
