Gabriel TARPLEY Obituary

NEWPORT NEWS - Gabriel Hylton Tarpley passed away on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, with his family by his side.
He was born on Nov. 29, 1928, in Danville, Va., and grew up in Norfolk, Va. Gabe was a resident of Newport News for 53 years. He was a member and former deacon of Temple Baptist Church in Newport News. Gabe was an Army veteran, but spent most of his career as a business owner in the business forms industry and as a real estate agent. He was also a past President of Peninsula Sales and Marketing Executives Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Pearl Tarpley; brothers, Edward Tarpley and Paul Tarpley Jr.; and sister, Ann Seredynski.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Emily Fleming Tarpley. He is also survived by four children, Kay Tarpley Capps, Gary Hylton Tarpley and his wife, Susan, Christine Tarpley Tumelty and her husband, John, and Richard Edward Tarpley. He lovingly leaves behind eight grandchildren, Rachel Capps Skogsberg, Brandon E. Capps, Meredith Capps, Lindsey Tarpley, Courtney Tarpley, Jack Tumelty, Mary Kate Tumelty, and Emily Tumelty; and three great-grandchildren, Landon Skogsberg, Cannon Phillips and Brady Capps.
Gabe was always 'ahead of his time' and had an endless quest for knowledge. He was a sports enthusiast with a passion for golf, the Washington Redskins and the New York Yankees. He loved his family, church and his God. He will be greatly missed.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, at Peninsula Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 16, at Temple Baptist Church with the Rev. Lynn Hardaway officiating. Burial will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park. A reception will be held at the church following interment.
Memorial donations may be made to Temple Baptist Church, 235 Harpersville Rd., Newport News, VA 23601.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Travers Edwards, Riverside Hospice and the VA Hospice for their compassion and care. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.

I am so sad to hear of Gabe's passing. While we are sad on Earth, the Jacksons, Granddad and all of the Tarpleys are partying it up with our Lord :) He was a very sweet man and I know he will be missed greatly by all.

My Uncle Gabe was one of a kind and I am going to miss hearing his standard greeting of "Hey Paigee" (in that high pitched baby voice he would use...even when I was 40)! He is certainly going to be missed by many. My thoughts and prayers go out to Emiline, Kay, Chrissie, Gary, Ricky and all the grandkids and great grandkids.
