Gary Anderson Obituary

Gary Stephen Anderson, 60, passed away peacefully and surrounded by loved ones on Friday, February 24, 2023 following a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Springfield, MA and moved to Virginia when he was 10. Gary was a 1980 graduate of Tabb High School and 1984 graduate of Virginia Tech. In addition to being a proud Hokie, Gary was a lifelong fan of the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox. He was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church.

Gary spent his 33-year career in the Newport News Circuit Court Clerk's Office retiring as the Clerk of Court. He was extremely proud of his staff and the excellent reputation of the Clerk's Office. He was a true Family Man and all knew how he loved "his girls". He was a devoted husband to Cathy, who he met in high school and after many path crossings, they shared a marriage of almost 35 years. Gary was a loving father to Erin, who he shared a love of football and baseball, and Kelsey, who he shared his wit and humor. He was proud to call Matt his son when he married Kelsey and he was happiest to be Grampa to Tyler. Gary was a caring son, brother, uncle, and in-law to many loved ones.

Gary is survived by his wife, Cathleen Reese Anderson; his daughter, Erin Anderson; his daughter and son-in-law, Kelsey and Matthew McCarthy; his grandson and best buddy, Tyler Stephen Anderson; his mother, Phyllis Anderson; sisters and spouses, Sharilyn and David Brown, Jodi and Michael Ward; his parents-in-law, Joan and Roger Reese; brother-in-law, Michael Reese; nieces and nephews, Melissa and Steven Guill, Brittany and Christopher Ward; and his best friend, Michael Walsh.

The family would like to thank Dr. Flavia Kostov for her compassion and care.

Gary's family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 3, 2023 at Weymouth Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at St. Luke's UMC by officiant The Reverend Megan Collins.

I send my condolences to the entire Anderson family. Gary was a tribute to our community and a friend to the lawyers in our city. I considered him a good friend and it was such a loss to all of us not to have him as our Circuit Court Clerk. His reputation was stellar and his kindnesses many. I pray for peace for the family

I have started and stopped and deleted for a while now. I can say knowing and working with and for Gary for his entire career with Circuit Court Clerks Office he was definitely such a super guy. Gary, I want to thank you again for believing in me to work as your Chief Deputy. You were a wonderful boss who knew the law 100% and made each and everyone of us enjoy working for you. Melissa and family,

Your uncle Gary was awesome. I remember the sticker on your car window when he was running for office. Everyone would beep and yell "Go Gary!!!".

While death leaves a heartache that no one can heal, love leaves a memory that no one can steal. I pray that the love that surrounds you today, gives you the courage to face all of your tomorrows.

I love you!!

Once a week, for seven years, working for a national civil news newspaper, Gary would great me with a smile, or a "good to see you". The energy in the clerk's office was special and I believe that Gary thought of and treated everyone there as "family". Rest in peace.

I knew Gary for over 30 years. He was like a brother to me. Always uplifting and concerned about my well-being. Working along side Gary in The Newport News Circuit Court Clerks Office was a pleasure. He and his former Boss, Rex A. Davis ran a well maintained office together. They were always out at the front counter with their sleeves rolled up helping out customers and their own Deputy Clerk's.
They often went far and above to the extent of the law to help the citizens in need.
Gary was an honest and fair person. I have no doubt. Gary will be missed by all that truly knew him.
"Sir Gary" as I would often call him, was a true gentleman. Always willing to help someone, including me.
God bless your soul. You gave a good fight Sir Gary.
God has continued plans for you. One being a Guardian Angel to your family.
Cheers to you Sir Gary.
