I was just speaking to my co-worker about my school librarian that made a huge impact on me. I went to Cooper Elementary school in Hampton from K-6th grade.
I was lucky to have Mrs. Fletcher. I remember so many things about her even from 1974-1981. I was a library assistant for a few years. That gave me extra time with her.
I am writing this in 2021. I Google her name and found this site.
I just wanted to say that she was a special person to me and I appreciate all that she did for the students at my school.
I am sorry for your loss.

Brenda,

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family with the passing of another member of your family, Mrs. Fletcher. I will cherish the time we crossed paths at HU, where I immediately recognized her. We talked at great length during that time. It was so pleasurable listening and capturing her facial expressions as she spoke so fondly of her family and how proud she was of each of her children's many many accomplishments to the stranger I was to her. Although many years and faces have come and gone in her lifetime, those moments further proved the humble lady she was. I also spoke with her once more when I read of your sister Terri and there was such amazing strength in her voice. This call to her was placed just minutes after you and your family had left. Since Hartford, CT was the last time we talked, please contact me.

My condolences to the family. Mrs. Fletcher was a blessing to me when I was studying to become a teacher. I was a student at ODU but I went to the HU library to conduct my research and write my papers. My son was 2 yrs old at the time and would often accompany me whenever I would go. I would try to make the trips during his naptimes. I never had to search for any materials. I only had to tell Mrs. Fletcher the subject area, she would
get the information and bring it to me because she was very knowledgeable about educational journals. This saved me lots of time and many times, my work was completed before my son would wake up from his nap.
She was truly a remarkable woman.Thank you Mrs. Fletcher.

Rita, you may not remember me from Union, but, we went to school together. I was also one of your mother's junior library assistants there. I loved spending time with her and she taught me so much. She was so pleasant, warm and patient. I work at Hampton University. I would see her on the campus sometimes, and she still had a smile and a hug for me. Her passing is a great loss for this community and all the people she touched.

Gladys Bolling Fletcher was one of those rare treasures we are fortunate to find in life. I can not think of her without smiling, and feeling the genuine warmth which always radiated from her.

Gladys was sweet and charming in temperament, modest about her accomplishments and the impact she had on so many, and she was always a vision of loveliness. I can personally recall many instances at Hampton Institute, and with the Phoebus Improvement League in which Gladys willingly stepped to the fore to provide a solution, or fill an unwanted void – she had a great, giving heart. I miss her.

I offer my love, prayers and condolences for her beautiful family and dear friends. I, also, rejoice in knowing that Gladys is in perpetual bliss, and that we shall meet again.

Rita, I am so sorry to hear of Mrs. Fletcher's death. While it has been years since I have seen her or you she was such an inspiration to me. She helped to lay a foundation for me and many students at Union School Elementary School. She was always so encouraging. I had planned to pay you a visit, but had to leave town due to a family emergency. I would love to see you or talk to you. So I am leaving my phone number for you to give me a call if you like. Take comfort in knowing the impact your mother had on many young people's lives. I hope you remember me from school.

I am deeply saddened by the death of Mrs. Fletcher. I knew Mrs. Fletcher quite well, and I am grateful as a Hampton Institute graduate to have been blessed to meet and know such a wonderful person. Mrs. Fletcher helped me numerous times in the library on the campus. I also remember Mrs. Fletcher being very active in the National Hampton Alumni Association. A link has been broken in our Hampton Family chain, and as we reflect on Mrs. Fletchers life we all know that she truly let her life do the singing.
