From the day I met Greg in 1960 (5 yrs old) he treated me like a brother. Donald White (another special friend) introduced us. I must stop and say “Mom and Pop” always treated Donald and me like sons. “The Boys” all called each other's parents Mom and Pop. Sharon and Teresa later treated us as big brothers. We went almost everywhere Greg went as a family. He even brought us to Murfreesboro, NC with him to the Family Reunions. Mr. Sanford let me say - I very much appreciate the time you spent taking our allowance playing cards and dominoes. It wasn't until I was grown that I began to realize all the lessons I learned about conflict without fighting, competition and being a man from that. All of us here need to spend time with young people. The lessons will take care of themselves. You can't take credit for all their accomplishments and you cannot take blame for all their failures.
When I think about Greg I think about FIRSTS. I will mention a few of the good FIRSTS. When we raced he was FIRST. Those short bow legs would be hauling! He was the FIRST to have his birthday each year since his was in February. He was the FIRST to play Boys Club Football (my Mom only let me play for one day!). He was the FIRST to have a girlfriend. Donald and I spent a lot of time at his girlfriend's house too. He was the FIRST to get a really nice car (a red Firebird). He was the FIRST to father a child. And the last time I saw him (at my Mothers – his Moms - funeral) He was the FIRST person I saw when I drove up to the funeral home. You get the picture.
The three of us spent the highs and lows of life together –and- separately. Each time we saw each other it was like it was just a second had passed since we last saw each other. I thank GOD for a true friend that I knew for 54 years. None of us know the day, time, or circumstances of our passing - so if you haven't accepted CHRIST do it now.
