Henry MCCOY Obituary

HAMPTON - After a brief illness, Dr. Henry Davis McCoy, 85, died Thursday, April 21, 2011, with his family by his side. A native of South Carolina, he had been a Peninsula resident since 1953.
Dr. McCoy was a graduate of the University of South Carolina. In between his years at USC, he proudly served his country during WWII, stationed in North Africa as a signalman in the U.S. Navy. He graduated from the Medical College of Virginia in 1953, with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. Dr. McCoy then settled in Newport News and practiced dentistry here for over 50 years. He served as president of the Peninsula Dental Society and the Virginia State Academy of General dentistry. He was also a longtime member of First United Methodist Church and served in many capacities there, including chairman of the board.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Mapp McCoy; daughter, Wendy M. Maxey and her husband, Ellis; daughter, Christy Woodzell and her husband, Mack; daughter, Judith M. Gilliland and her husband, Frank; son, H. Dave McCoy Jr.; son, Dr. Stephen W. Shield and wife, Kathy; grandson, E. Franklin Maxey III; grandson, W. Craig Maxey and his wife, Susan; grandson, Matthew M. Woodzell; granddaughter, Cailey J. Auvil and her husband, Jimmy; grandson, Benjamin D. Gilliland; granddaughter, Rebecca M. Shield; grandsons, Michael S. Shield, Matthew G. Shield, and Andrew W. Shield. He is also survived by his niece, Elizabeth Hankins and her husband, Deck Hankins; and niece, Grayson Campell.
Dr. McCoy was a true gentleman and friend. He greeted every day with a smile, and loved sharing jokes and stories with his patients and family. Dr. McCoy treated no one as a stranger and was always willing to help anyone in need. During his career, he gladly provided free dental care to numerous Peninsula residents. He was a generous and kind man who never asked for anything in return. Dr. McCoy enjoyed fishing, tennis, time in the Outer Banks and travel, but he was always the happiest when he was with his family. He and his wife, Nancy, shared a love that lasted for 30 years. He will be truly missed by all of those who knew him.
Following a private graveside ceremony, a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 27, at First United Methodist Church by the Rev. John T. LeGault Jr.
Memorial donations may be made to the Peninsula SPCA, 523 J. Cylde Morris Blvd., Newport News, VA 23601.

Dear Wendy, Christy, Judy, and Dave:

So many memories I have with you all and your dad; our fishing trips, water skiing, fun times spent together so many years ago! I will never forget them. Thank you all for being such an important part of my childhood. Your dad was like a second father to me. I will always remember his smile and sense of humor. My dad, mom, and I just want you to know that we are thinking of you and send our love and prayers to your whole family.

To the McCoy family,
I am very sorry to hear of Dr. McCoy's passing. He was my only Dentist for over 50 years until his retirement. He was also my parents' dentist and he and my father, who was also a native of South Carolina, shared many stories of growing up there. I will always remember how Dr. McCoy's humor got me through many hard times including braces and wisdom teeth. I will truly miss him. He was one of a kind.

Christy,Dave,Judy,Wendy,Nancy and family,

I just heard about Dr. McCoy and I am so sad. I am so sorry I wasn't there today to pay tribute to him. He was such a special person and was always so kind to me. I will always remember his smile, his jokes and his easy going joyful nature. During my time working with him and living above the office he was a father figure and a dear friend. He taught me so much, not only about denistry but life. We had some fun and crazy times. I miss those days and will cherish them always. He loved you all so much and was so proud of his family. We are all so blessed to have had him in our lives. I'll miss him.

Judy, Wendy, and Cristy,

Your dad was one of a kind and he and my father were true friends for a long, long time. I am sure that they are telling "fish stories" to each
other again.
My husband had a terrible experience with a toothache once and your dad opened up the office on a weekend to fix the problem. And we picked our present dentist because he trained under your dad's guidance.
Remember the "girl scout meetings" at the house in Riverside. Very fond memories.
Please know that you are in my prayers.

Nancy helped me get my first job at age 18 working for Dr. McCoy. I had to literally jog behind him to keep up with all his energy he had at age 60! He was hard working and expected the same from his assistants. I respected and admired Dr. McCoy. I loved working with Cristy and babysitting Matthew! Wonderful memories of the McCoy family and my sincere heartfelt sadness goes out to the family for your loss. Melissa "Missie" Bizzell Bourn

To All the McCoy Clan

As a patient for over 50 years and a friend for as many, I will miss Dr. McCoy. He and my father grew up together in South Carolina and in Virginia our families remained intertwined.

The fishing at the third tunnel island with Dr. McCoy' boat and my father's boat tied up for the night was so much fun.

Over the years Dr. McCoy did some really wonderful things, one of which I will forever be greatfull. He repaired a special ring in a very, very short time so it could be with me at an awful time. He understood!

Dr. McCoy was the first dentist I saw and he was the first dentist my four boys saw. He got them through football, iceskating, and many other teeth-unfriendly times.

We will miss his sense of humor, his can-do attitude about anything; He was a great friend to our entire family and will be missed by all.

With prayers for peace,
Ellen B. Rhodes

To All:

I'm so sorry for your loss. I've always thought of your dad with such fondness. I have so many wonderful memories of your family and all the mischievous things we did and got away with. I don't know if your dad ever knew how much time we spent in your crawl space! My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Love,

I grew up basically seeing Dr. McCoy as an uncle. As my father John Quinley, Dr. Smith, and Dr. McCoy were best of friends and together in their dental practices. I remember such fun and encouragement being together with him, sometimes fishing through a night on Hampton Roads and the Chesapeake Bay, or enjoying being either in or around an afternoon of tennis. He will be greatly missed, but I will always remember and appreciate the mentoring that was mine from this highly motivated man full of kindness. My thoughts and prayers are with all the family in this moment.

Dear McCoy Family,
I was very saddened to hear of Dr. McCoy's passing - he was such a wonderful man. I was also one of his dental patients and, to this day, I believe my diligence in getting regular check-ups is a direct result of him making my visits so enjoyable. He was definitely one of a kind and will be greatly missed! My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time.
