Herman Ashby Obituary

WILLIAMSBURG - On Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, God sent his loving angel down to Earth to bring home the soul of our beloved Herman Emanuel Ashby. Herman, who most people knew as "Jap," slipped into a peaceful sleep as his family witnessed a dash of sunlight rays coming through the windows of Williamsburg Community Hospital to claim him. He was born on Aug. 9, 1944, the son of Forest Ashby and the late Elizabeth Ashby. In 1962, he graduated from Bruton Heights School. After graduating, he continued his education at Virginia Union University. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force. He was one of the original members of the Invader softball team. His love of sports led him to work with many youth athletic groups. He leaves to cherish his precious memories his loving and devoted wife, Gaile Diana Ashby; his daughters, Mary Compton of Kentucky, Isis B. Ashby and Hermanda Ashby of Williamsburg; his father, Forest Ashby; his sisters, Marion H. Ashby, S. Linda Howard and Sharmine Ellis, all of Williamsburg; his brothers, Jan E. Ashby of Warrenton and Brian H. Ashby of Williamsburg; his aunt, Florence "Dolly" Stephens; his grandchildren, Cadeidra, Deno and Kai; his mother-in-law, Mary E. Brown; his son-in-law, Teddy Compton; five sisters-in-law; seven brothers-in-law; and a host of devoted and loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A homegoing service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 28, at New Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Whitehead officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Family and friends will assemble by noon Thursday at 211 Debra Drive. Mr. Ashby may be viewed in the funeral home beginning at 5 p.m., and the family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday. Professional services entrusted to the staff of Whiting's Funeral Home, Williamsburg.

To Gail, the girls and the entire Ashby family, we are so sorry to hear of your loss and know that we feel your pain as well. "Jap" was a wonderful, jovial person, and the best first baseman the Invaders will ever see. :-) Take comfort in knowing that Jap is now at peace, and resting painlessly. May God bless you.

To the Ashby Family:

Father/Husband/Brother/Son/Friend....for the younger guys of the 70's Herman was one that always gave us inspiration to continue to work towards our goals. His mere presence at an athletic event----his support---was encouragement to do more. You knew that you would be critiqued by him to refine your skills in a positive productive manner to help you. May the memories of Jap continue to inspire the family and all those he touched. Sorrowfully submitted

"Reach down," I cried, Dear Jesus, And take my trembling hand The path I tread is lonely And I do not understand The landmarks on the road ahead; They are hidden from my view." Then Jesus whispered softly, "Fear not, I'll carry you." So, now, though darkness deepens, I am divinely blessed, for come what may within His arms, I rest... I sweetly rest. Our deepest sympathy in the lost of your loved one. Lovingly but sorrofully submitted The Canaday Family

"O' tender and sweet was the Master's voice As He lovingly called to thee; Come over the line it's only a step I'm waiting my child for thee." It is so hard to find the words to express our deepest sympathy to you in the loss of your loved one. Just remember that Herman answered the Master's voice as He loving called to him and he took that step where the Master awaited him. Lovingly but sorrofully submitted and God bless each of you.
