NEWPORT NEWS - Ivan Edward Spain died on Sept. 1, 2004. He was born May 17, 1921, in Church Road, Va. He began his career as an electrician apprentice at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company. Mr. Spain was past president of the Apprentice Alumni Association. He retired after 47 years of dedicated service. Mr. Spain was a veteran of WWII having served in the U.S. Navy and was a 32nd degree Mason. Mr. Spain was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, taught Sunday school for 40 years and served as chairman of the administrative board. He was a past president of the PTA and very active in youth baseball leagues. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Ruth Shelton Spain; his daughter, Susan Spain Beers and husband, Frank; his sons, Ivan Edward Spain Jr. and wife, Sharon, and David Shelton Spain and wife, Jacqueline; his grandchildren, Amy, Andrew and Seth Hyatt, Kylie and Dylan Spain, and Bryce and Zach Bowman; and sister, Gracie S. Farrar; and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday at Trinity United Methodist Church by the Rev. Sam McPhail with burial to follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. Memorial donations may take the form of contributions to Trinity United Methodist Church, 228 - 29th Street, Newport News, VA 23607. Arrangements by Peninsula Funeral Home.
