Ivie Johnson Obituary

Ivie Lee Johnson, 93, passed away peacefully on February 4, 2022. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace (Wally) Charles Johnson, her parents William (Billy) Wilkerson and Rebecca D. Wilkerson, and her sister, Phyllis Hamlett Burns.

Lee was born on January 11, 1929, in Farmville, Va., and was a Williamsburg resident for 58 years. She was a long time member of Williamsburg Presbyterian Church. Lee owned and operated Johnson's Guest Home for over 46 years. Her greatest joy was welcoming guests into her inviting home and treating them like family. She developed lasting relationships with many of these visitors and their close friendship continued until her passing.

Lee served as President of the Skipwith Farms Garden Club and was the recipient of a Lifetime Membership Award. She won numerous blue ribbons for her creative and beautiful floral arrangements.

She is survived by her daughter, Debbie Danford (Doug), her son, Todd Johnson (Angela), her beloved grandson Spencer Wallace Johnson, two bonus granddaughters Samantha Smiley-Collins (Ben) and Sara Smiley, and great grandson Easton Kenney.

The family thanks all of her dedicated caregivers from Home Care Assistance. If desired, please send memorial donations to Williamsburg Volunteer Fire Department, 401 Lafayette Street, Williamsburg, VA 23185.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at Williamsburg Presbyterian Church.

Each year when these 'Guest Book' sharing opportunities arrive I welcome the chance to add anew the memories of the long lasting friendship which Lee and I shared. I often find myself thinking about her wisdom and positive outlook on life and her love of so many friends. The last couple of years before she went to join her Wallace we would chat on the phone on many a Sunday evening and what a wonderful time of sharing deep feelings of life, death, family and God's love for us all. I feel blessed for that time. Lee touched my life in a profound way. What a privilege to have her cherished friendship for 4+ decades. She was a truly remarkable Southern lady!

Lee and Wallace were dear friends and wonderful people. Memories of them are dear to my heart.
Lee had a way of making people feel special. She saw the best in them. She had a deeply loving spirit for her many friends and neighbors but especially for her beloved family. How pleased she was of each of them!
She had a strong mind and a keen intellect...plus a strong sense of what was right and good.
She loved her Savior Jesus Christ and we spoke of Him often.
My husband and I first visited Lee and Wallace the Christmas of 1977 when Todd received his drum set (if I'm recalling correctly here).
She loved her flower arranging and taught me a few tips and tricks in that department. She was thrilled, and perhaps surprised with a Christmas arrangement I made for her after that! But, of course, she was the best teacher! Several times over the years we visited antique shops together and had such fun. We shared incidents of food poisoning, raccoon invasion, positive pregnancy tests, grandchildren brags.... so many things that make life interesting. Lee's friendship and hospitality enriched many lives, mine included.
I have a beautiful red maple tree that came from the seedling of the red maple that Wallace had planted in the backyard of 101 Thomas Nelson Lane. He had potted several seedlings. After Wallace passed, Lee gifted a well established seedling Red Maple to me and it now stands majestic and bright in our front lawn, a precious reminder of the gift of her friendship and kindness. I cherish the memories. I miss Lee and look forward with joy to seeing her and Wallace again.
