James Poindexter "Deck" Hankins Jr.

- Mr. James Poindexter "Deck" Hankins Jr., of 329 Mountain Road, Halifax, Va., died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, at his home. He was born in Halifax County, Va., on January 1, 1925, and was 76 years old. He was the son of Mr. James Poindexter Hankins Sr. and Mrs. Laura Vick Hankins and was married to Hilda Moore Hankins for 51 years. He was a lifelong member and former senior warden of St. John's Episcopal Church. He attended V.M.I. and was a veteran and prisoner of war of World War II. Mr. Hankins was a graduate of the University of Richmond in 1949, where he was a member of the Phi-Gamma-Delta fraternity. He was a former principal of Turbeville Elementary School, first personnel director of the South Boston Westinghouse Plant and first director of development for Hampton Roads Academy in Newport News. He was a member of the Blue Ribbon Committee for the planning and building of Halifax County High School and was retired owner and operator of Hankins Furniture House. Mr. James Poindexter "Deck" Hankins Jr. is survived by his wife, Mrs. Hilda Moore Hankins of Halifax; two daughters, Laura Lee Chandler and her husband, Ted, of Midlothian, Anne Moore and her husband, Art, of Midlothian; one son, James P. "Deck" Hankins III and his wife, Debra, of High Point, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Katie Chandler, Rebecca Chandler, Emily Anne Moore, Ryan Moore, Chandler Moore, Dexter Hankins and Kristina Hankins. A funeral service for Mr. James Poindexter "Deck" Hankins Jr. will be held at 2 p.m. today at St. John's Episcopal Church with the Rev. David Booher conducting the service.
