James Marks Obituary

James O. Marks passed away on Saturday, August 12, 2023. He was born in Newport News. "Jimmie" graduated St. Vincent High School (now Peninsula Catholic High School) in 1953. He served in the U.S. Navy after high school and started working for Newport News Shipbuilding, where he also retired after a long career. Jimmie volunteered many hours serving at Our Lady of Mount Carmel and St. Bede's Catholic churches, as well as Peninsula Catholic High School. He was an avid reader and skilled swimmer. While not having children of his own, he was very much thought of as a father figure by his nieces and was loved and respected by all that knew him. He was truly a kind soul and will be greatly missed.

Jimmie was preceded in death by his parents, Oren & Marian Marks; his younger brother, Michael Marks, and his twin and life-long best friend, John Marks. He is survived by his three nieces, Gina Wilburn (Tom), Kelly Birchfield (Ron, deceased) and Casey Bellman (Justin); 8 great nephews & nieces: Ryan, Haley, Alex, Kyle, Kamren, Kennedy, Kooper and Kolton.

A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, August 17, 2023 at Weymouth Funeral Home with interment to follow at Peninsula Memorial Park. A Celebration of Life will follow at Commonwealth Senior Living, 236 Commons Way, Williamsburg, VA 23185. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to The Marks Trust Fund at Peninsula Catholic High School, 600 Harpersville Rd., Newport News, VA 23601. So saddened to hear of Jim´s passing. We knew the Marks twins at OLMC and reconnected with them years later at St. Bedes. After Johnnie died, I sat with Jim most Sundays at 8:30 Mass. I miss seeing them .

To a kind and oh so sweet gentle soul that became part of my family for 51years. Many Christmas´s, Thanksgivings, Easters and graduations and many more joyous celebrations. Always interesting, always fun with a great sense of humor. You always took a caring, loving sincere interest in all people you got to know. You will be missed terribly and loved forever by anyone who was lucky enough to have known you and your twin John. Godspeed my friend to the best trip you will ever take and you took many here on earth. With sadness and joy, good bye for now, until we meet again! With sincere sympathy, Bonnie and the whole Williams family.

While Judy and I mourn his passing, we celebrate his life! A true southern gentleman and the kindest person we've ever known, he was loved by everyone and he never met a stranger who didn't become a friend. We met in the early 70s when I worked at the bank with Johnnie and, like so many, we became fast friends. The kindness and generosity of the Marks twins will never be forgotten!

It was an honor to have known Jimmy and shared a long, long friendship! We should all approach this day with a smile, knowing that Jimmy enjoyed a life well lived. We know that he's smiling as he goes to reunite with Johnny, Michael and his many friends and family previously passed. Happy sails bug guy! Carolyn & Joe Philpott

Jimmy, give Johnny a big hug from me, for I know you are having a joyful celebration of reunion with him and all of the others there in heaven. My forever birthday twins. Such friendship, love, kindness, and every beautiful fruit of the spirit was the gift given by these two to anyone they touched. My heart aches but it is lifted up knowing I will see them again and laughter and happiness will follow. Prayers for peace and comfort for the family and friends during this time of loss and sorrow. Sail on Jimmy! Bonnie Bridger Mittelmaier
