YORKTOWN, VA. - Laurence D. Leavitt died at home in Yorktown, VA on June 21, 2017. He was born on August 21, 1952 in Knoxville, TN, son of the late H. Douglas and Joyce McKoy Leavitt. After some time in Florida, Tennessee and Indiana, his family settled in Statesboro, GA where he graduated from Statesboro High School in 1970. He graduated from North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC where he earned a B. S. in Aerospace Engineering. He was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity while at NC State. While a student in Raleigh, he met Mary Beth Hardy, a student at Meredith College. After graduation in 1975, he was employed as a research engineer at the NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA. That same year, he and Mary beth were married. While working as a researcher in the Propulsion Aerodynamics Branch he was involved in many important research projects aimed at the improvement of aircraft performance, primarily military high performance aircraft. He worked on a number of technologies, but was known for his work in multi-axis thrust vectoring exhaust nozzles, thrust reversers, and propulsion simulation test techniques. In 1980 he received a M. S. Degree in Fluid Dynamics from The George Washington University. For several years he was involved in the development of an efficient propulsion airframe integration on the B-2 Stealth Bomber. In 1987 he became the Group Leader for the Advanced Nozzle Concepts Group within the Branch. In 1990, he became the Assistant Head of the Propulsion Aerodynamics Branch when he was responsible for the research program and operations of the Langley 16 Foot Transonic Wind Tunnel. In 1997, he was named the Head of the Configuration Aerodynamics Branch at Langley and he remained in that role for approximately 12 years. In 2008, he was selected as the Chief Engineer for Aerosciences within the Research Directorate. Prior to his retirement in 2015, he served as Acting Chief Engineer of the Langley Research Center. Over his career, he received two NASA honor awards including the prestigious Outstanding Leadership Medal and the Exceptional Service Medal. He received multiple NASA Group Achievement Awards for his contributions to a variety of programs, and numerous -performance, Superior Achievement, and Center Team awards. From 2001 until 2013, he was an active member of the NATO Research and Technology Organization and a member of the Applied Vehicle Technology Panel. He chaired the Performance, Stability and Control, Fluid Physics Technical Committee and a number of international research collaborations, symposia, and workshops. He was an active member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), serving in every office of the local Hampton Roads Section. At the National level, he served three years as Chair of the Associate Fellows Committee and was a member of the Air Breathing Propulsion Systems Integration Technical Committee and the Green Engineering Program Committee. He was a Fellow in the AIAA. Larry was very involved in York sports as his two sons were growing up. He managed and coached in the York County Little League for a dozen years, and prior to the birth of his sons, he coached baseball and soccer in the Phillips Athletic Association. He was ordained a Deacon in the Yorkminster Presbyterian church. He served on the Edgehill Community Board for several years. He loved sailing the Chesapeake Bay and boating on Lake Gaston, playing golf, and riding his bike. He was a member of the Colonial Shag club and with the love of his wife Mary Beth, was known to be a 'decent' shag dancer. Larry is survived by his wife of 41 years, Mary Beth Leavitt; a son, Jonathan M. Leavitt; a sister, Carole L. Davis and her husband David L. Davis; nieces and nephews, Elizabeth, Mary Katherine, Stevie, Laura, Michele and Rob; and dear family friends Kayla Waterfield, who has been like a daughter, and her husband Brian Waterfield. So sorry to hear about Larry! He had invited me to bring my bow your house years ago to deal with the deer in your yard. I didn't see any from the wooden platform in the back, but it was one of the coldest hunts I can remember, since it was the first cold day of the year and I was not ready for it. I really appreciated he trusted me enough to allow me to try. He was a gentleman.

I was fortunate to have met Larry during my career as a NASA wind tunnel test engineer - he was so much more than an engineer. He was a warm and compassionate human. So sorry to learn of his passing.

I had the pleasure of coaching Larry in his Senior year of high school and having him in recreation programs as he grew up here in Statesboro. He was one of the nicest kids I was ever associated with in my life. I always considered him a friend.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss and of Larry's passing. While I did not know Larry well, I crossed paths with him from time to time both at LaRC while I was there and later in industry meetings and conferences. He was a great guy, friendly, down-to-earth, interested in people, and he always engaged me in conversation. I remember first meeting him thirty years ago this summer when I played on his softball team as a summer intern. More recently, he reached out to me for industry assistance on a workshop he was planning. We will miss him.

My sincerest condolences to you and your family on Larry's passing. I'm an engineer at a company in the Midwest that was involved with the research work that Larry did on multi-axis thrust vectoring nozzles and I interacted with Larry on some of his AIAA activities. His technical expertise, professional interactions, and personal character will be missed by the aerospace community.

Marybeth and Jon,
I worked with Larry for many, many years, both of us in Aero for most of our careers. Larry was an excellent engineer, superb leader, a great mentor to so many, and a friend to all! I'm so very sorry for your loss, I know he must be reunited with your son/brother and watching over you both. My husband and I are out of town or we would surely be there to extend what little comfort we could offer. Our deepest condolences.
Sincerely,
Cindy Lee

I am so sorry to hear of Larry's passing. I first met Larry on a trip to an international conference in Budapest, Hungary for the NATO Research and Technology Organization in 2005. I was young and inexperienced - but Larry welcomed my participation and encouraged my contributions. Larry's gesture taught me the importance of being inclusive of young engineers and their contributions. He exhibited this value for the entire time that I worked with him until his retirement in 2015. Now, I endeavor to pass on the grace that he showed me to the young engineers that will follow us. Thank you for the lessons Larry - I will pass them on.

Mary Beth and Jon,

Harmony and I are so sorry for your loss. Larry was a great guy. He mentored me and put up with my antics when I came to NASA as a young punk grad student ready to tackle the world, and it was one of the great fortunes of my life to get hired on when he started up CAB. He always had time for me when I needed it, always had guidance, and always led me in the right direction. I know I'm not the only one to feel like this, because Larry was a father figure to many young researchers who came up under his leadership. He is going to be missed in many ways, but he has left an amazing legacy at NASA that we are all very proud to carry on.
