LEWIS STONE Obituary

Lewis S. Stone Jr., 91, a leading Peninsula real estate agent and appraiser for 58 years, passed away peacefully at his home with his daughter by his side Saturday, November 20, 2021.

A native of Newport News, Lewis was raised in the Hilton area, where childhood buddies matured into lifelong friendships. He was the son of the late Lewis Schmeltz Stone and Hazel Atkinson Stone. He was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 62 years, Peggy Williams Stone, sisters Mary Stone Pope, and Anne Stone Campbell, and his youngest daughter, Mary Paige Stone.

Lewis was a devoted member of the Hidenwood Presbyterian Church, serving as a volunteer when and wherever he could be of service. He was affectionately known as the "gentle-persistent-persuader," drawing others into participation.

Lewis graduated from Morrison High School, (now Warwick High School) in 1950 and entered VPI, today known as VA Tech, joining the Corp of Cadets. Upon graduation in 1954, Lewis entered the Army as a Lieutenant with the Anti-Aircraft Defense Systems.

Following his military service, he and Peggy returned to Newport News to raise their daughters and Lewis began a career in real estate with Carpenter Brothers. His success in real estate and appraisal resulted in numerous recognitions, including outstanding Salesman of the Year for Virginia, Region VI. He also served as a director for the Newport News-Hampton Board of Realtors. A lover of all things related to VA Tech, he was an active member of the local Alumni Association and served as Alumni President. He was also recognized in 2018 by the Department of Veterans Affairs for 19 years of dedicated service to Veterans of the United States of America.

Lewis served on several Boards and Commissions for the City of Newport News including the Newport News Board of Equalization and the Board of Condemnation Commissioners. He was also an active member of the Warwick Rotary, The German Club, and served as President of The Hampton Roads Assembly.

Lewis's passions were golf, fishing and hunting. He was an engaged member of the James River Country Club and played his first rounds of golf at JRCC as a junior member in the early 40s. He also won 3 super senior championships and served on numerous committees and the Board of Directors.

He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Stone Landry and her husband, Jim of Smithfield; grandsons, James Richard Landry, III of Scottsdale, AZ and Lewis Bryant Landry of Newport News; beloved family and countless friends considered as family.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 27, 2021 at Hidenwood Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hidenwood Presbyterian Church, 414 Hiden Blvd, Newport News, VA 23606 or Peninsula SPCA, 523 J Clyde Morris Blvd, Newport News, VA 23606. It's taken me 3 years to know of Lewis' passing. He fished in our farm pond in White Stone for many years. A true gentleman we won't forget. Always remembered us at Christmas with a wonderful ham.
Our condolences to the family. Katherine Chase
